After several delays, students demand no further postponement for NEET, JEE

Students are demanding that the authorities should not postpone the competitive entrance exam any further. Students from disadvantaged areas or backgrounds believe that online preparation would make it difficult for them to catch up as they lack proper resources.

By: Education Desk

After several delays in conducting the engineering and medical entrance exam — JEE Main and NEET – students are fearing that any further postponement may affect their entire academic year. As several coaching institutes had informed indianexpress.com earlier, students are raising concerns over the delay and are finding it a challenge to stay focussed in the long-term.

The JEE Main, which was to be held in April, has now been postponed till September and NEET too has been deferred twice to be held on September 13. Several experts had also informed that with a higher delay and more practice, students have better chances of getting a good rank now. Since the competition is relatively high, the cut-off can also increase. However, there are students who have appeared for JEE Main in January and are now preparing for Advanced as they believe there would not be enough time left for it after Main.

Students too have taken to Twitter to express their anger. They are demanding that the authorities should not postpone the competitive entrance exam any further. Students from disadvantaged areas or backgrounds believe that the online preparation would make it difficult for them to catch up as they lack proper resources.

Trump suggests he might want to take on income inequality

Some economists have said that income disparity in the U.S. became worse after the 2017 Republican tax law championed by Trump, which cut the top tax rate for high-income earners.

By: Bloomberg

President Donald Trump suggested he might be interested in pushing for policy that addresses the widening income gap in the U.S., but didn’t suggest a plan.

Trump commented in a retweet about how much some prominent billionaires have increased their net worth during the Coronavirus Pandemic, while tens of millions of Americans have lost their jobs.

Trump tweeted a Business Insider graphic and video that compared the 40 million Americans filing for unemployment during the pandemic to billionaires whose net worth, according to the video, increased by half a trillion dollars.

“I actually agree with this,” Trump tweeted. “Too much income disparity. Changes must be made, and soon!”

At least one of Trump’s regular foils — Jeff Bezos, chief executive officer of Amazon.com Inc., and publisher of the Washington Post newspaper — was featured, as well as Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk.

The video also claimed that casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, a large donor to Republican causes, saw his net worth swell by $5 billion during the pandemic. The Bloomberg Rich List, though, shows Adelson’s fortune down $11 billion for the year to date.

Maharashtra: More than 1.5 lakh complaints, 83 FIRs against soyabean seed germination failure

As many as 83 FIRs have been lodged against seed companies in this regard, which has rattled both the companies and farmers alike.

Written by Parthasarathi Biswas | Pune

More than 1.5 lakh complaints have been raised by farmers across the state about germination failure of soyabean seeds in the last two months.

As many as 83 FIRs have been lodged against seed companies in this regard, which has rattled both the companies and farmers alike. Seed companies, however, said it could snowball into a major issue next year as many firms have decided to exit the soyabean seed sector in view of the criminal FIRs being filed.

Early sowing notwithstanding, soyabean growers across the state have started reporting germination failure on their field. A host of reasons, ranging from inferior quality of seeds, insufficient soil moisture to deep sowing, has resulted in failure of the oilseed to germinate on time. Estimates by the Soyabean Processors Association of India (SOPA) has said around 20-25 per cent of the seeds planted required resowing. The matter had taken a serious turn when a two-judge Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court had initiated a suo motu PIL in the matter. The Supreme Court, however, had put a stay on action in the matter.

Till date, 1.60 lakh complaints have been registered across the state in this regard, including 83 FIRs against seed companies for their alleged role in supplying spurious seeds.

Mahabeej, the state government’s seed corporation, has started the work of replacing both the seeds as well as giving monetary compensation to the farmers who had used their seed. So far, 988 quintals of seeds have been replaced by the corporation, which has also paid Rs 74.14 lakh as compensation.

Senior officers of the state agriculture department said that around 70 per cent of the complaints were due to inferior quality of seeds. Heavy rain during October last year had also severely affected soyabean crops. Being an open pollination variety (OPV), farmers and seed companies use the crop for seed production. Due to the heavy rain last year, higher moisture content in the seeds had had reduced the germination rate of the seeds from 70 to 60 per cent.

Meanwhile, FIRs against seed companies have rattled the industry, which is dominated by private players. Some seed firms said manufacturers from Madhya Pradesh have already opted out of manufacturing soyabean seed for the next season with many players in Maharashtra also deciding to follow suit.

Ajeet Mulay, chairman of Seed Industries Association of Maharashtra, said exit of private players would create a shortage of seeds for farmers.
