Bring more depth to your hiring process

Smart Employers avoid the risk of being dazzled by a great first impression and a sharp résumé by watching a candidate respond to a number of different challenges. You’re sure to hire the most capable applicant with the following proven methods:

• Give a pre-interview assignment. Ask a candidate to visit one of your stores, plants, campuses, offices, or Web page before the interview. Ask for some insights: Does he or she see any problems? Can the candidate present a sound solution? This is a great way to see how prospective employees handle a task.

• Ask all your questions at once. At the top of the interview, lay out all your questions up front. Performance then shifts to the candidate. This strategy also forces you to listen, and prevents you from speaking too much or telegraphing the answers you wish to hear from the candidates.

• Get out of the office. Conduct your interview in a nearby restaurant, or at a trade association conference. Observe how candidates conduct themselves in less formal situations. Are they courteous? Punctual? Organized? Able to focus without being distracted? Their behavior will tell you a lot about their day-to-day personality.

We at People matters are experienced in the study of trends among Candidates and Employers. As recruiters we know the DOs' and DONTs' of writing CVs that are handed over to Employers by Candidates.

An International survey of HR directors and managers has concluded that CVs are failing to make the grade. The survey produced some thought-provoking results:

- 46% of employers believe that one in ten people lie about qualifications in their CV;
- one in ten employers believe that 40% of people lie about job titles.

It has been discovered that there are still too many unfocused, distracted and off-putting CVs hitting employers' desks, and a great many CVs that do not entirely tell the truth.

In delivering placement support for mid and senior levels of staff, People Matters is well placed to advise those looking for new roles as to what works, and what doesn't.

A survey says:

“Even good CVs often fail to communicate the right message. This shows there is an art to getting through that first 'sift'. More than anything else it's about two things: the initial impact on page one of your CV, and making a short but credible claim that you match the key requirements of the job.”

Some key results:
88% of employers prefer to see a short profile or summary on page one of a CV
85% of employers do NOT want a photograph with a CV
Of those who expressed a view, 96% dislike CVs written by professional CV writing services
Two thirds of HR specialists believe that a CV should be no more than two pages long

Some of the more over-the-top CV stunts and gimmicks identified in the survey include:

-Attaching a tea bag with the message 'have a cup of tea while you read
this
-Stapling money saying the other half would be handed over at interview
-Attaching notes with emoticons or messages
