Bring more depth to your hiring process
Smart Employers avoid the risk of being dazzled by a great first impression and a sharp résumé by watching a candidate respond to a number of different challenges. You’re sure to hire the most capable applicant with the following proven methods:
• Give a pre-interview assignment. Ask a candidate to visit one of your stores, plants, campuses, offices, or Web page before the interview. Ask for some insights: Does he or she see any problems? Can the candidate present a sound solution? This is a great way to see how prospective employees handle a task.
• Ask all your questions at once. At the top of the interview, lay out all your questions up front. Performance then shifts to the candidate. This strategy also forces you to listen, and prevents you from speaking too much or telegraphing the answers you wish to hear from the candidates.
• Get out of the office. Conduct your interview in a nearby restaurant, or at a trade association conference. Observe how candidates conduct themselves in less formal situations. Are they courteous? Punctual? Organized? Able to focus without being distracted? Their behavior will tell you a lot about their day-to-day personality.
