August – September 2026

The on-going military conflict in the Middle East – mainly centered at the key chokepoint the Strait of Hormuz – has severely disrupted global maritime transportation. Commercial shipping has been forced into systemic rerouting, causing cascading economic and operational impacts across global trade routes.

Besides crew safety, stranded assets, economic and operational impacts due to system rerouting, the prolonged delays and uncertainties drastically accelerate marine asset corrosion by forcing vessels, offshore platforms, and coastal infrastructure into prolonged static lay-up in one of the most harsh, highly corrosive marine environments. The kind of cargo a vessel carries can also cause major problems. For example, according to maritime consultancy Brookes Bell, the Hormuz crisis has delayed many bulkers well past the safe time limit for storing sulphur in a steel hold, exposing ships to risk of severe and rapid corrosion.

Water temperatures in the Gulf routinely exceed 35°C (95°F) alongside high salinity levels. High surface temperatures and intense solar radiation degrade protective topcoats and anti-fouling coatings, exposing underlying steel directly to oxygenated seawater. There is also the problem of rapid biofouling accumulation; besides prolonged anchorage risks exhausting cathodic protection systems ahead of schedule, leaving bare steel exposed.

We hope the conflict is resolved as early as possible so that the maritime movement can resume to its normal levels at the earliest.

In this issue, our main focus is on high-temperature protective coatings. Originally dominated by simple furnace and engine parts, the sector now features advanced formulations that combine ceramic, silicone, and epoxy chemistries to withstand temperatures that exceed 1,0000C. Rapid industrialization across developing economies and rising capital expenditure in petrochemical processing infrastructure are anchoring this growth trajectory.

Due to India's drive for infrastructure modernization and China's petrochemical expansion, the Asia-Pacific holds the highest share of the High Temperature Coatings Market, at over 44%. We try and explore the various kinds of high temperature protective coatings and the new developments fueling its growth. Besides this, we have all our regular columns and features to keep you updated on what's happening in the field of corrosion mitigation.

June-July 2026

The global push toward cleaner, low-VOC, and more efficient industrial finishing is fueling steady momentum in the powder coating equipment market, which is on track to climb from an estimated USD 1.43 billion in 2025 to roughly USD 1.93 billion by 2034, expanding at a CAGR of 3.4% over the forecast window. The market is expected to reach USD 1.48 billion in 2026 alone, reflecting consistent demand as manufacturers across the automotive, rail rolling stock, appliance, architectural, and
general industrial sectors continue replacing legacy liquid-paint lines with dry-powder systems, according to a Polaris Market Research report.

The standout growth story, however, belongs to powder recovery and reclaim systems, which the report identities as the fastest-expanding equipment segment through 2034. As raw material costs climb and sustainability mandates tighten, manufacturers are investing heavily in technology that captures and reuses overspray powder, directly improving operating margins while cutting waste. Curing ovens are following a parallel trajectory, with plants increasingly upgrading to low temperature curing and heat-recovery designs that lower energy bills without compromising finish quality.

In this issue, we analyze the areas of growth and innovation in the
powder coating segment, along with our regular columns and features. It is well known that every successful coating system has a beginning. More often than not, it begins with a properly prepared surface and the professionals who make it possible.

Despite their contribution, surface preparation professionals often receive less recognition than other stages of the coating process.
This growing recognition of the importance of surface preparation has led to increasing awareness around Blasters & Painters Day, observed on July 24. The initiative aims to highlight the role of abrasive blasting professionals and painters while encouraging safer blasting practices and greater appreciation for the people behind industrial surface preparation.

After all, if others can have their own celebratory Day e.g. Doctors' Day; Teachers' Day; Nurses' Day; Engineers' Day, Fathers' Day, Mothers' Day… it is only fit; we should celebrate Blasters & Painters Day!

April-May 2026

The 2026 Gulf conflict has intensified the scope for alternative fuels, acting as a catalyst for accelerating green energy transitions. Rising oil prices (~$100/barrel) and disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz are driving an urgent, long-term shift toward renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydropower, and nuclear energy.

In every economic decision, force majeure measures like earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, typhoons, landslides, wars – external or civil, election disruptions, currency value devaluation or appreciation are all usually taken care of. According to an ex-vice president of an oil company, the risk at the Strait of Hormuz was one factor that was never thought of or taken seriously.

However, the almighty has given humans so many energy resources in the form of water (hydro), fire (hot springs, volcanoes), wind (wind energy), sun (solar) and earth (magnetism, including oil and gas).

In this edition, we speak about the global wind turbine coatings market that is witnessing steady expansion as the renewable energy sector gains momentum worldwide.

This growth is largely driven by increasing investments in wind energy projects, technological advancements in coating materials, and the need for enhanced durability and performance of wind turbine components in harsh environmental conditions. Wind turbine coatings protect blades and structures from harsh environmental conditions like rain erosion, UV radiation, and saltwater corrosion, enhancing lifespan and efficiency.

The market is also benefiting from technological advancements in coating formulations. Manufacturers are investing in research and development to create coatings with enhanced properties such as self-healing capabilities, improved adhesion, and reduced environmental impact.

In this issue we talk about the challenges, the opportunities and some of the new developments in this sector. Plus, all our regular columns and features.

In the meanwhile, we hope and trust that the situation in the Gulf region will stabilize and normalize soon.

February & March 2026

Much has been written about AI transforming healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and retail through predictive analytics, automation, and generative models. At the same time AI and automation are making many strides in surface technology – which includes coatings, surface treatments, material characterization, and manufacturing finishing – shifting it from manual, experience-based operations to intelligent, data-driven, and highly precise systems.

Artificial intelligence and automation have long been an integral part of industrial surface technology. Whether process monitoring, quality assurance, material efficiency or plant control, digital technologies are fundamentally changing painting processes and raising them to a new level of performance. Intelligent, automated solutions that are already in use today and will become even more important in the future. Close cooperation with manufacturers, system providers, research institutions and users shows that AI is no longer a promise for the future, but a decisive lever for more efficient, sustainable and stable coating processes.

This technology is not just automating old processes; it is creating entirely new possibilities. It helps manufacturers produce higher-quality paint with less waste, empowers consumers to find the perfect color with a tap on their screen, and pushes the boundaries of what a simple coat of paint can achieve. It helps manufacturers produce higher quality paint with less waste, empowers consumers to find the perfect color with a tap on their screen, and pushes the boundaries of what a simple coat of paint can do.

These illustrations show that AI and automation in surface technology are no longer viewed in isolation, but increasingly as integral components of continuous process chains. The focus is shifting from individual optimizations to networked systems in which process data, quality information and plant parameters are collated and evaluated in real time. This development opens up new potential for reproducible quality, resource efficiency and process stability – but at the same time requires a high level of system integration and robust data models.

In this issue, we try and discuss some of the latest developments within our sector in the field of AI and automation. Besides, this issue also carries all our regular features and columns to keep our readers updated.

At the same time, we also hope the hostilities in the Middle East comes to an end as soon as possible and we are able to get on with our businesses and lives as usual and in peace!
