IEEE Women In Engineering (WiE) Affinity Group Kharagpur Section, is organizing a webinar session on Sept 3rd, 2021 (Friday) by industry leaders.

The details of the session are as follows:

Topic: Hands-on session on making your data ready for AI

Description of the talk: Data practitioners spend a considerable amount of time in iterative pre-processing of data before it is considered to be of adequate quality for downstream machine learning tasks. Although time-consuming, pre-processing is an essential step because the quality of training data directly impacts the complexity as well as the accuracy of AI models. Getting insights into the quality of data before it enters a machine learning pipeline can significantly reduce model building time, streamline data preparation efforts and improve the overall reliability of the AI pipeline. In this session, we will walk through the various data quality challenges and try them on standard datasets.

Speaker 1: Hima Patel, Research Manager at IBM Research Lab, India

Biography: Hima Patel is an experienced researcher, technology leader and manages a team of researchers at IBM Research Labs, India. She is on the mission to build innovative tools and technologies to democratise data preparation for AI lifecycles for various data modalities. She has recently also been intrigued by the data challenges in modernisation of legacy database systems, and is leading the development of tools to solve some of these issues. Prior to IBM, she has spent time at research groups at Shell and GE, where she has focussed on problems related to using AI for asset management and medical devices. She is also deeply involved with IEEE Computer Society Bangalore and AnitaB organisations, and spends time volunteering on several initiatives.

Speaker 2: Ruhi Sharma Mittal, Research Advisory Engineer at IBM Research Lab, India

Biography: Ruhi Sharma Mittal is a Research Advisory Engineer at IBM Research Labs, India. In the DataOps team at IBM, she is currently working on building solutions to improve data quality to make data ready for machine learning pipelines. She did her Masters from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. She has authored and co-authored many research papers in top conferences. She has also filed several patents related to machine learning and applied AI. Her research interest includes Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and applied AI.

IEEE Women In Engineering (WiE) Affinity Group Kharagpur Section and Ambar, IIT Kharagpur is organizing a webinar talk on May 23, 2021 (Sunday).
The details of the talk are as follows:

Topic: "Gender Equality, Not just a term, part of our effort towards a more inclusive STEM"

Description of the talk: Science practice in India perceives itself to be an objective exercise. However, science is performed by scientists, who bring their own personal and social biases to their practice. Moreover, multiple pieces of evidence exist to show that science practice in India is dominated by cis heterosexual Savarna men. The webinar will highlight these inequities in Indian science practice through some data from the speaker's own work and well as those of others. Using some of his own work, he will also talk about how one can contribute to making STEM a more hospitable space for people from marginalized communities.

Speaker: Sayatan Datta, queer-trans science writer, communicator, and journalist, feminist multimedia science collective, TheLifeofScience.com

IEEE Women In Engineering (WiE) Affinity Group Kharagpur Section is organising a webinar talk on April 22, 2021 (Thursday).
The details of the talk are as follows:

Topic: "Catch them young: Integrating gender sensitivity and inclusion in education"

Description of the talk: College life is the sweet phase in life where a student practices adulthood before going into the real world. What better time to explore the concept of inclusion and gender roles? We will look at what inclusion means and why this world needs it, especially in technology. The focus will also be on barriers and social conditioning, followed by possible ways to tackle this. The "diversity radar" is a muscle that can be built over time to pick up unconscious biases around us. The muscle can start with the easiest factor, gender and extend to other invisible structures like language, ethnicity and geography. Let us hope to start working on that muscle with this session.
