Paper Coating Binders

Binders are the second primarily abundant factor in the coating color following the pigments with a whole amount of approximately 3 V 106 t of dry substances. A lot of dissimilar binder types are used. The mainly imperative aims used for the function of binders in coating colors are the binding of tincture particles to base paper, the binding of tincture particles to each other, fractional filling of voids among pigment particles (porous coating structure) and affecting the viscosity and water retention of the coating color.
An ultimate binder can be characterized by means of good binding strength, good water preservation properties, easiness of amalgamation or dissolving in water, universal ease of handling, fine compatibility with other coating components, low or preferred effect on the viscosity of the coating color, good mechanical and chemical durability, good ocular and mechanical properties, no redolent and safe to health, low affinity to foaming, resistant to bacteria, stable quality properties, low price and good accessibility. Again, as with pigments, there is no distinct binder, which can meet all these requirements. Latexes convene many of them; however, they often need a co-binder or thickener to regulate the rheology and water retention to the desired level.
