India could become a global auto parts manufacturing hub

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has made auto component manufacturers in India pivot their business models to source more parts from within the country.

Leading parts makers such as Lumax, Sona Comstar, Minda Industries, and Sandhar Technologies have been forced to look at other de-risking options due to rising input costs, thereby giving the country an opportunity to become a major manufacturing hub.

While several Southeast Asian nations are wooing these as well, India provides a unique opportunity to auto Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) since it already has an established manufacturing base.

Auto component makers have already started processing more parts within the country, in addition to holding larger inventories, creating buffer stocks and entering into long-term contracts.

Earlier, the lead cycle for such contracts was shorter, but the ongoing supply disruption has stretched that to about nine months for some components. This has become untenable and resulted in auto component players sourcing more from within the country.

“Now, because of the multiple disruptions and volatility, the forecasting and ordering cycle keeps changing,” said Deepak Jain, managing director of Lumax Industries.

Auto firms will begin manufacturing flex-fuel vehicles within six months, says Gadkari

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said top officials of automobile companies have promised him that they will start manufacturing vehicles of flex-fuel variants within six months. Addressing 'ET Global Business Summit' virtually, Gadkari further said the government is working on a plan to shift public transport to 100 per cent clean energy sources.

"This week, I had a meeting with managing directors of all big automobile companies and SIAM representatives. And they promised me that they will start manufacturing flex-fuel engines for vehicles that can run on more than one fuel," he said.

Flex-fuel, or flexible fuel, is an alternative fuel with a combination of gasoline and methanol or ethanol.

The road transport and highways minister said companies like TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto have already started producing flex-fuel engines for their two and three-wheelers.

He said now farmers are making bio-ethanol from rice, corn and sugarcane juice.

According to Gadkari, soon most vehicles in India will run on 100 per cent ethanol.

Last year in December, the government had issued an advisory to carmakers to introduce flexible-fuel engines in vehicles.

Gadkari also said the government is working to encourage the use of green hydrogen and other alternative fuels.

"But at the same time you understand, presently we are are using maximum petrol and diesel, and the international scenario is not good.

"We are facing crucial problems because there is a war between Russia and Ukraine and I feel that it is really a big challenge," he said.

So the only option, Gadkari noted, is alternative fuels like bio-ethanol and LNG, which are import substitutes, cost effective, and pollution-free.

The minister pointed out that presently India imports crude oil worth Rs 8 lakh crore and it can go up to Rs 25 lakh crore in the next five years. Source:ET

MG Motor India plans to raise $500 m locally in capex push

The maker of the Hector and Astor SUVs is seeking to tap the local market because of a delay in getting government approval for new investment from the Chinese parent. MG Motor India has already initiated talks with private equity investors, several people in the know told ET.

The company is exploring setting up an EV subsidiary to bring in new investors. MG Motor may later go for a local public listing to provide an exit route to private equity investors or the parent may buy back their stake, said one of the people.

An email sent to MG Motor India seeking comment did not elicit any response till press time Friday.

Managing director Rajiv Chaba had told ET last year that the company was considering investing about Rs 2,000 crore to expand capacity and bring in new products.

It plans to launch a range of EVs, from a small hatchback with a starting price under Rs 10 lakh, to a compact SUV and high-end D-segment SUV.

The compact EVs may be based on the GS or Global Small EV platform jointly developed by SAIC-GM, which may cater to emerging markets, including India and Indonesia. The C- and D-segment EVs meant for India may come from the Sigma platform.
The EV hatchback, with a range of 200 km on full charge, will be the first off the mark and will hit the roads in the first quarter of 2023.

Gaurav Vangaal, associate director at S&P Global Mobility, said given the abundant capital available from green funds worldwide, it was prudent to raise money through private equity.

Madras HC allows CCI to pass final order in tyre cos’ pricing case

In a crucial judgment, Madras high court has paved the way for Competition Commission of India (CCI) to pass an order against major tyre manufacturers, whom it has been investigating for anti-market activities like price parallelism and cartelisation since 2014-15.

According to the high court order, the CCI can now issue its final order against the tyre manufacturers based on its probe finding. Earlier, in 2015, the court had allowed CCI to investigate but barred it from taking any final decision.

The case was initiated by corporate affairs ministry in 2013-14, where it had said that five domestic tyre manufacturer which account for 90% of the market share including--CEAT, JK Tyres,
MRF, Apollo Tyres and their association- Automotive Tyre Manufacturer Association-had increased prices of tyres and tubes on the plea of increase in cost of raw materials, but not vice versa.

In the order pronounced on January 6, Justice T.Raja and T.V.Thamilselvi has dismissed the writ appeal, filed by MRF ( largest tyre manufacturer) against order passed by a single judge holding that CCI probe into anti-market activities, requires no interference.
