World’s third most preferred location for higher studies by international students. Last year, several thousand Indian students opted for higher education in France, a jump of 50% over the past five years, a number that is increasing every year.

During past visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to France, both countries agreed on allowing Indian students to stay in France for two years, one for the period of studies and one after completion of their course for the purpose of acquiring professional experience, with a reciprocal arrangement for French students in India. The Embassy offers a no of scholarships programme for students pursuing Master's degrees, exchange semesters and research internships.

I am also living in Paris and want to share some real facts like:

During your first year of studies, you only need to show your visa as proof of your residency status. However, you have to register OFII now its online, within 90 days of arrival and undertake a medical examination to validate your visa within 4 months. From your second year of studies onward, you will need to apply for a Carte de Sejour.

France used to have a complicated system of degrees and diplomas, but as part of the Bologna process degrees are being standardised into Licence, Master and Doctorate levels, which correspond to Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees, requiring three, two, and three years respectively to complete.The large majority of higher education institutions in France are state-funded, meaning there is only a nominal tuition fee of around €200-€400 per year, depending on the level of studies. Many business schools, however, are privately owned, and tuition fees for non-EU students can exceed €15,000 per year.

Cost of living and housing

The cost of living in France is similar to other countries in Europe and you have to show minimum 615 euro per month for getting your Visa. Here u can survive with 400 to 600 euro per month. After getting part time job in restaurant, pizza hut, kfc you can earn 10 to 15 euro per hour and can work 20 hours legally in a week.

The French academic year corresponds roughly with most other northern hemisphere academic calendars.The autumn semester usually begins in late September, followed by a spring semester starting in early February. In addition to holidays around Christmas and New Year, some universities may have a spring break and holidays around All Saints’ Day (November 1st) and Easter. Exams are normally at the end of each semester, and there are usually three months of holidays in summer, running from the beginning of July to the end of September. Students are legally allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during the semester, and full-time during the holiday period.

France has always been a favourite destination for scientists, managers, engineers, thinkers, artists and writers from all over the world, and many have made it their home.
The rich cultural diversity and heritage reflected in everyday life, the high quality of education as also the French State’s commitment towards welcoming international students make it an attractive destination for higher education.
The world’s sixth-largest economy, France is also the third most popular destination for international students.

France offers students a full spectrum of academic and professional opportunities at affordable fees: 73 public universities, more than 200 engineering schools, 150 business and management schools, 20 schools of architecture and 3 000 other specialized institutions. All in all, they enrol about 300,000 international students.

In 2019, around 10,000 Indian students chose France for pursuing higher education. The target of having 10,000 students annually in France, set for 2020 by President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was attained well in advance. The Embassy of France, through Institut français en Inde and the Campus France India network, developed an ambitious programme to this end:

Connecting 500 premier Indian institutes and universities with French higher education institutes to develop dynamic exchange programmes;
Countrywide presence with 13 Campus France offices, which help Indian students find the best study or professional programme that can boost their career;
Offering over 500 scholarships in 2017 for the best Indian students, with the number set to increase;
Launch of the France Alumni India network, an initiative to reunite and reconnect former students from France through a digital platform. The 1 000+ alumni already registered can have direct access to the representatives of more than 400 French companies operating in India, which seek young talent;
France’s framing of very attractive visa policies for Indian students and alumni.

5- France-Alumni worldwide network
First unveiled in Paris by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development in November 2014, France Alumni is an efficient multilingual digital platform to connect, inform and guide foreign students who have studied in French higher education institutes.

France Alumni – India, launched in September 2016, helps former students acquire key industry knowledge, discover exciting career opportunities, and gain valuable insights on the economic and professional world. Through this platform, the over 400 French companies operating in India, which employ 300,000 skilled Indian workers, can also share information on job offers and internships, develop their brand and recruit Indian talents.

The France Alumni portal enables former foreign students to keep abreast of upcoming events and opportunities. The 2017-2018 schedule includes, among others, job fairs, French Master classes, recognition of alumni, webinars and seminars on topical issues, mentorship programmes, and participation in philanthropic activities.

6- Visas designed for France alumni
2-year Visa Extension
Indian students in France can extend their stay in the country beyond the completion of their studies in order to acquire a work experience.
An agreement was signed between the two nations during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015. This allows Indian students in France to stay for a period of 24 months: a 12-month visa renewable once for a further period of 12 months.
5-year Visa
In July 2013, the Ambassador of France to India decided to facilitate travel to France for all Indian citizens residing in India who have studied in France.
The 5-year visa allows its holders to stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days, with a 90-day gap between stays. Indian alumni of Indo-French dual degree programmes (PG) are eligible to apply as well. Alumni from all generations are eligible. Accompanying spouse and children are also eligible.
Talent Passport
In February 2016, France established the “Talent Passport,” a new type of multi-year residence permit (valid for four years) for the highly skilled foreigners who wish to live in France.
It has been especially conceived for researchers, artists, employees on assignments abroad, and scientists, as well as figures of international renown. Foreign students who obtain it can work more easily in France after finishing their studies. Spouses, too, can benefit from the Talent Passport, which allows them to work in France.
