Wipro has fired 300 of its Indian employees for obtaining secondary employment without permission. The crackdown on 'moonlighting' has received mixed reactions, with some praising it and others criticizing it.
Wipro employees, like many others in the IT services industry, used remote working during the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath.
This newfound freedom coincided with some employees taking on jobs at other companies while still employed by Wipro, a practice known as moonlighting. At the end of September, a group of approximately 300 employees who were allegedly engaging in this behavior were discovered - and fired.
Explaining the companyโs actions, Chairman Rishad Premji said that the behavior of moonlighting employees was โplain and simple cheating.โ
