We would like to invite submissions to our symposium held during the International Congress of Entomology (ICE 2020) from July 19th - 24th, 2020 in Helsinki, Finland, entitled, “Exploiting host-location behaviors and host-plant resistance to manage invasive woodborers”.

International trade has increased the rate at which woodboring insects are being introduced into novel habitats. The lack of coevolutionary history with potential host plants, and escape from natural enemies has caused these non-native insects to become ecological and economic threats in their new ranges. Identifying patterns in host-location behaviors by woodborers and their natural enemies, as well as within mechanisms of resistance by these plants to attackers, can lead to management practices that reduce the success of colonization and increase mortality of woodborers in novel habitats.

The goal of this symposium is to spur discussion regarding the theory and application of maintaining robust populations of trees that are resistant to attack by woodboring beetles. This task requires crosstalk among researchers that study host location by woodborers and their natural enemies, as well as those that study plant defense, ultimately leading to the selection of populations of trees that minimize damage and reduce the likelihood of outbreaks of woodboring beetles. We are looking for researchers that are currently conducting research in these topic areas to present and provide further insights.

Topics of interest include:

-Theoretical or synthetic presentations on: plant defense against woodboring insects and host-location by natural enemies
-Host selection cues used by woodborers and their natural enemies, including but not limited to: cues that are chemical, visual, and tactile
-Mechanisms of resistance used by host trees: antibiosis, antixenosis, and/or tolerance
-Patterns in coevolved resistant traits and lack of those mechanisms in novel hosts

Job Description:

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position for an Evolutionary Biologist. We are seeking highly collaborative candidates with expertise in the evolution of any non-model, multi-cellular animal organism, including vertebrates or insects. The department has excellent biodiversity collections offering significant opportunities for individuals who wish to serve in a curatorial role.



The anticipated appointment date is fall 2020 or earlier. The successful candidate is expected to (1) establish an extramurally funded research program; (2) teach and mentor undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students; and (3) have a strong potential for collaboration across ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB).



Requirements:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, postdoctoral research experience, and a strong record of research accomplishments.

The African Natural History Research Trust (ANHRT) is a charitable research trust and museum focused on African entomological biodiversity. Our research is aimed at increasing the scientific knowledge of African insects with an emphasis on Lepidoptera.

Working as part of a small team, this role requires an organised individual with experience of working with Lepidoptera collections. The successful candidate will be capable of conducting self and group-led taxonomic research and have a strong understanding of zoological nomenclature. The successful candidate will be proficient at disseminating their findings through scientific journals and other scientific outlets, identifying and recurating parts of the collections as required whilst ensuring collections are safeguarded in line with ANHRT collections management protocol.

We welcome applicants with a broad understanding of Lepidopteran taxa. Candidates with specific knowledge of the following Heteroceran families would be preferable but candidates with expertise in other families will also be considered: Noctuidae, Erebidae, Lasiocampidae, Bombycidae, Limacodidae and/or Microlepidoptera.

DAFM- funded research Master’s studentship:
Forecasting the time of emergence of an important forestry pest
In Integrated Pest Management, appropriate timing of management measures can help reduce the
amount of pesticides or other agents used. This depends on the ability to predict the timing and
severity of pest attack. The large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis, is a serious pest of forestry in
Ireland and throughout northern Europe. Development takes place in the stumps of felled conifer
trees and emerging adults feed on young trees newly planted on site. Currently, young trees are
protected by chemical insecticides, applied when weevil attack is expected. As part of a larger
project on Integrated Pest Management of this insect, the master’s project will use simulation
modelling and existing data on weevil populations in Ireland in a novel approach to improve
forecasting of weevil attack, based on stump assessment of weevil developmental stage and
subsequent weather conditions, and likely impacts of climate change on weevil life cycles. The
project will use a simulation model (Wainhouse et al., 2014, Agric. Forest Entomol. 16, 136-146)
developed to represent geographic variation in voltinism of pine weevil under climate change; we
have already shown that this model could be used to predict site-specific patterns of weevil
emergence based on data from local weather stations. In this project, we will build on these
preliminary findings, (a) incorporating data from additional sites to detect potential site-specific
factors that could be taken into account in order for the model to more reliably provide accurate
predictions of weevil emergence, (b) incorporating data on weevil population structure in stumps,
(c) developing a simplified version of the model using in-stump population structure as a starting
point and weather (temperature) data to forecast timing of weevil emergence and (d) refining the
stump-assessment protocol currently used by forest managers to take account of weevil population
structure and subsequent local weather conditions to more accurately predict timing and extent of
weevil emergence.
This desk-based project will be supervised by Prof Christine Griffin of Biology, Dr Rowan Fealy of
Geography and Dr Rafael de Andrade Moral of the Mathematics and Statistics Department at
Maynooth University.
The master’s scholarship is €24,000 euro per annum for two years, to include tuition fees (€6,200 for
EU students in 2018/19), with the remainder of the studentship paid monthly as a tax-free stipend.
Applicants should have a primary degree (minimum 2.1) in Biology, Environmental Science or a
related discipline and must be numerate. Candidates must also have excellent written and oral
communication skills, and be able to work independently and as part of a team. Familiarity with
statistical modelling and/or programming, preferably using R, would be an advantage.
