Why Do Recruiters Ask, “Tell Me About Yourself”?
Have you ever wondered why an interviewer asks, “Tell me about yourself” or “Walk me through your resume” when your resume is already sitting right in front of them?
If they have already read your qualifications, experience, skills, and education, then what exactly are they trying to find out?
The answer is: a lot more than what's written on your resume.
These questions often give recruiters their first real opportunity to see how you present yourself beyond the piece of paper in front of them.
They may already know what you have done. Now they want to see how you communicate it.
Are you able to express your thoughts clearly?
Can you speak confidently without sounding over-rehearsed?
Do you maintain comfortable eye contact?
How is your body language?
Can you stay composed when you're put on the spot?
Your answer gives the recruiter a glimpse of your communication skills, confidence, professionalism, and overall personality.
That's why you shouldn't treat these questions as an opportunity to simply repeat everything written on your resume.
Instead, use them as your first chance to make a strong impression.
Keep your answer fresh and relevant. Highlight experiences or qualities that connect with the role. Present your ideas clearly, speak naturally, maintain good eye contact, and let your confidence show through your tone and body language.
You don't need to sound perfect.
You need to sound prepared, confident, and genuinely interested in the opportunity.
