The Socio-Economic and Caste Census 2011 report has been recently released. The data on Odisha shows a clear picture of the failure of the economic-political system in the state to secure a decent life for the Odia people. According to this report, the monthly income of 88% of the families residing in the rural areas of Odisha is less than Rs.5,000/-. Around 58.84% families belong to the working c
lass. This data clearly demonstrates the pathetic plight of the workers in the State. Around 40 lakh workers of the state migrate to other states in search of work. Of course, Odisha has been a major attraction for corporate capital investment. What attracts capitalists are the state’s natural resources and very cheap labour. Only 7,153 people have got employment in 49 large enterprises established in Odisha upto 2014. Around 39,17,944 educated unemployed are registered in employment exchanges throughout Odisha, whereas only 42,974 persons have got jobs in the last 15 years till 2014. Even now there is no such scheme that can ensure a permanent and regular uplifting of the working class. On the other hand, the established political formations and organizations in Odisha are not concerned with the daily struggles of these exploited working classes, and envisage a political transformation based on their basis. Shramajibi Vichar Kendra, Odisha is a coordination centre for comrades who have been involved in the organization and struggles of the working class in the state. It seeks to host, promote and publish research and inquiries in the life and struggles of the working class – its self-organisation and self-activities.
