Overview of Neurophysiology at NIMHANS

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is a multidisciplinary institute for patient care and academic pursuit located in Bangalore, India. The priority gradient adopted at the institute is service, manpower development and research. Multidisciplinary integrated approach is the mainstay of this institute, paving the way to transl

ate the results from the bench to the bedside. The department of Neurophysiology was established in 1975 by Dr. T. The department was started to provide comprehensive teaching programmes in Neurophysiology to post graduate students of Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery students of NIMHANS as well as to carry out basic and applied research in Neuroscience. Later M.Phil and Ph.D courses in Neurophysiology were introduced. Degrees have been awarded so far. Over the years a comprehensive approach to study Neurophysiology from molecule to the organism has been developed. The Department has obtained substantial funding from leading National funding agencies such as ICMR, DST, DRDO etc. to carry out research. The Department strongly believes in the importance of multidisciplinary research programmes for the growth of Neuroscience and our research activities reflect this conviction as far as possible. The work carried out in the department has resulted in several International publications. Students are bestowed with prestigious awards such as INSA Young Scientist award in recognition of their research work.
