🇦🇺 Why Many International Nurses Miss Out on Australian Job Opportunities

Australia continues to face a shortage of qualified nurses, and healthcare employers are actively recruiting internationally. However, there is one requirement that determines whether your application moves forward or ends immediately.

The first question most Australian healthcare employers ask is:

“Are you AHPRA registered?”

If your answer is YES, the next question is:
“Can you provide evidence of your AHPRA registration?”

If your answer is NO, the response is often:
“We’re sorry, but we can only consider nurses who are eligible to work in Australia.”

This is why many qualified international nurses struggle to secure sponsorship or employment. It is not because they lack experience—it is because they are not yet AHPRA registered.

Healthcare employers want ready-to-work candidates. They are looking for nurses who have already completed the AHPRA registration process and are prepared to commence employment with minimal delay.

At NursesGO International, a division of AD Brejour Global Migration & Recruitment Services, we prepare nurses to become employer-ready by guiding them through every stage of the Australian nursing registration pathway, including:

• AHPRA registration guidance
• English language requirements
• Orientation and NCLEX-RN/MCQ preparation (where applicable)
•Documentation support
• Employer matching after registration

Don’t wait until you find an employer to start your AHPRA registration. Complete your registration first, then approach the job market as a nurse who is ready to work.

That is the difference between simply looking for opportunities and being ready to accept them.

AHPRA Registration Series – Part 3

Submitting Your AHPRA Application: What Happens Next?

Congratulations! If you have gathered all the required documents for your AHPRA registration, you’re ready for the next step—submitting your application.

Here’s what happens after you apply:

1. Your application is lodged with AHPRA
Your completed application and supporting documents are submitted for assessment.

2. Your documents are reviewed
AHPRA checks your identity, nursing qualifications, registration history, employment history, English language proficiency, and other supporting documents to ensure they meet the registration requirements.

3. Assessment Outcome
After reviewing your application, AHPRA will advise you of the next stage. Depending on your individual circumstances, you may be eligible to proceed toward registration or be asked to meet additional registration requirements.

Candidates whose nursing qualifications were not obtained in one of the NMBA’s recognised countries (such as the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand, Ireland, or Northern Ireland) may be assessed under Stream B. As part of this pathway, they may be required to successfully complete the NCLEX-RN examination before progressing to the next stage of the registration process.

4. Orientation Program

All stream B candidates must complete an orientation program.
The Orientation Program introduces internationally qualified nurses to Australia’s healthcare system and professional standards.

During the program, you will learn about:

• The Australian healthcare system.
• The role and responsibilities of registered nurses.
• Professional, legal and ethical standards.
• Patient safety and quality care.
• Communication and cultural awareness.
• Documentation and clinical practice expectations.

The aim is to prepare you for safe and effective nursing practice in Australia.

6. NCLEX-RN Examination

The NCLEX-RN is a computer-based examination used to assess whether internationally qualified nurses have the knowledge and clinical judgment required to practise safely as a Registered Nurse in Australia.

The examination assesses areas such as:
• Safe and effective care.
• Health promotion and maintenance.
• Psychosocial integrity.
• Physiological integrity.
• Clinical decision-making

Passing the NCLEX-RN is a major milestone on your journey to becoming a Registered Nurse in Australia.

At NursesGO International, we guide our candidates through every stage of the registration process, including orientation, NCLEX preparation, and the next steps towards registration.

Send us an email today to request our Candidate Information Guide and Terms of Service and begin your Australian nursing journey with confidence.

AHPRA Registration for International Nurses Part 2
Document Preparation Made Simple

The AHPRA registration process can feel like a maze but with the right preparation, it becomes a straightforward administrative step.

As an internationally qualified nurse, one of the most common reasons for application delays is incomplete or incorrectly prepared documentation.

Here's a clear, practical guide to what you should have ready before you submit:

1. Valid Passport
A certified colour copy of your identification page.

2. Nursing Qualifications
Degree/diploma certificate and academic transcripts. Ensure they clearly outline theory and clinical placement hours.

3. Current Registration
Unrestricted registration certificate from your home country's nursing board, plus any required verification history.

4. Employment Records (if applicable)
Certified employment letters, references, and work history, particularly useful if AHPRA needs to assess equivalency.

5. English Language Proficiency
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) accepts approved tests. Effective for tests sat on or after 23 April 2026, the minimum scores are as follows :

Test Overall Listening, Reading, Writing Speaking.

IELTS Academic 7.0 7.0 7.0 6.5 7.0

OET — 350 360 350 360

PTE Academic 63 58 59 60 76

TOEFL iBT 91 22 22 23 24

Key requirements to note:

· Results are generally valid for 2 years from the test date

· You may combine scores from a maximum of two test sittings within a 12 month period, provided all minimum component scores are met across the sittings .

· Test results must be from a single sitting or combined as per the above rule, no "super scoring" across multiple reports .

6. Identity Documents
Birth certificate and any name-change documentation (e.g., marriage certificate) where applicable.

Important Tip:

Have all documents certified within 12 months of submission and translated by a NAATI-accredited translator if not in English.
We handle this part as part of our services. This small step saves weeks of back-and-forth.

The Bottom Line:

Preparation is the difference between a 6-week assessment and a 6-month delay. Get your documents in order early, and you'll navigate the AHPRA pathway with far greater ease.

We help simplify the process so you can focus on what matters most: beginning your nursing career in Australia.

AHPRA Registration Series (Part 1)

Who Is Eligible to Apply for AHPRA Registration?

Before you begin your journey to becoming a registered nurse in Australia, the first question you should ask is:

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for assessment by AHPRA and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), you should generally meet the following requirements:

1. You must hold a recognised nursing qualification from your home country that is comparable to Australian nursing education.
2. You must be registered or eligible for registration with the nursing regulatory authority in the country where you qualified.
3. You must satisfy AHPRA’s English language skills requirement, either through an approved English language pathway or by achieving the required scores in an accepted English language test. AHPRA updated its English language standard in 2026, so applicants should always check the current requirements. (ahpra.gov.au)
4. You must meet AHPRA’s core registration standards, which include:
* Criminal history check
* Recency of practice
* Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
* Professional indemnity insurance arrangements (where applicable) (nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au)
5. Your application will be assessed under the appropriate registration pathway. Since April 2025, Australia has additional streamlined pathways for some internationally qualified registered nurses from approved comparable jurisdictions. Nurses who do not qualify for those pathways continue through the standard international assessment process. (nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au)

Important for Ghanaian Nurses

Most nurses trained in Ghana are assessed through the standard internationally qualified nurse assessment process rather than the streamlined pathways designed for nurses from certain approved comparable jurisdictions. This does not mean you are ineligible—it simply means your assessment pathway is different. (nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au)

Coming Up in Part 2:
We’ll discuss the documents you should prepare before starting your AHPRA application and how to avoid common mistakes that delay approval.

What do you know about AHPRA registration?

If your dream is to work as a nurse in Australia, then AHPRA registration is one of the most important steps in your journey. Without it, you cannot practise as a Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse in Australia.

But here’s what many nurses don’t realise…

AHPRA registration is more than just submitting an application. It involves meeting the required standards, preparing the right documents, proving your English language proficiency, and following the correct registration pathway based on your qualifications.

A single mistake or missing document can delay your dream by months.

Over the coming days, I’ll be breaking down the entire AHPRA registration process—from eligibility and required documents to assessments, fees, timelines, and common mistakes applicants make.

🇦🇺 Your Nursing Career Could Be Your Pathway to Australia

Qualified nurses continue to be in high demand across Australia.

For internationally qualified nurses, the opportunity is real—but preparation is everything.

Here are some examples of indicative annual salary ranges:

Registered Nurses (General Medical & Surgical)
Australia: AUD 80,000 – AUD 110,000

Aged Care Registered Nurses
Australia: AUD 85,000 – AUD 115,000

Mental Health Registered Nurses
Australia: AUD 90,000 – AUD 120,000

Emergency & Critical Care Nurses
Australia: AUD 95,000 – AUD 130,000

Midwives
Australia: AUD 90,000 – AUD 125,000

These figures demonstrate what thousands of healthcare professionals already know—Australia continues to need experienced, compassionate, and qualified nurses.

But demand alone is not enough.

Your registration pathway must be carefully planned. Your qualifications need to be assessed. Your English language requirements, AHPRA registration, NCLEX (where applicable), visa pathway, employer sponsorship, and relocation plans all need to be considered before you take the next step.

This is where professional guidance makes the difference.

At NursesGO Australia, a healthcare recruitment program of AD Brejour Global Migration & Recruitment Services, we help qualified nurses navigate every stage of the journey—from eligibility assessment and AHPRA registration guidance to employer connections and migration support.
