RECRUITS OF BASIC INFANTRY TRAINING COURSE 2-2021 PASSES OUT

Recruits of Basic Infantry Training Course 2-2021 (BITC 2-2021) passed out from the Air Force Recruit Training School (AFRTS) on Friday 4 February 2022 at Myohaung Barracks in Takoradi.

The 309 Recruits, comprising 118 males and 196 females, took part in colourful Passing-Out Ceremony characterised by a series of drill displays to mark the successful completion of their six-month Basic Infantry Training which was under the auspices of the Commanding Officer of 2 Infantry Battalion, Col Abass Atuluk.

The Reviewing Officer for the parade, the Deputy Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Brig Gen WA Seidu cautioned the newly passed-out soldiers against unauthorised use of military uniforms, unauthorised operations including land and body guard duties for private individuals and debt collection among other illegal activities that could tarnish the image of the Armed Forces. He admonished them to commit fully to the numerous operations being carried out by the Armed Forces both on the local and international front to bring peace and development.

Privates Tiyamour Sissong Lilly (Parade Second-in Command) and Amewugah Gilbert, were adjudged the Best Female and Best in Academics, respectively. Private Arloo Evans (Parade Regimental Sergeant Major) was acknowledged as Best in Drill. Private Sokpe Joyce who was also the Parade Commander, was awarded for being the Overall Best Recruit.

UNMISS GHANBATT 9 COMMENCES TAILORING COURSE IN BENTIU

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) 9 as part of its Civil-Military Corporation (CIMIC) activities has commenced a 6-month tailoring course for some locals within the Battalion’s Area of Operation. A short ceremony was held at the forecourt of the St Martins de Porres Catholic Church in Bentiu on Tuesday 1 February 2022 to officially inaugurate the course.

In his remarks, the Commanding Officer (CO) of GHANBATT 9, Lt Col Michael Mfum conveyed his appreciation to the Parish Priest, Rev Fr Stephen Ocis Oman for allowing the course to take place on the church premises. He also thanked all stakeholders who made the organization of the course a success.

Rev Fr Ocis Oman in turn expressed gratitude to GHANBATT for their thoughtfulness towards the locals in Bentiu. He urged the course participants to undertake the course with the mindset of coming out as resourceful persons capable of producing clothes for local use.

To facilitate the course, GHANBATT donated different bundles of fabrics and a set of tools to each of the course participants to enable them undergo the training successfully.

GHANBATT DONATES TO MUSLIM COMMUNITY IN BENTIU’S IDP CAMP

Personnel of United Nations Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) 9 on Tuesday 25 January 2022 donated assorted items to the Muslim community at Sector 1 of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Bentiu. The gesture forms part of the Battalion’s Civil Military Corporation (CIMIC) activities being conducted to win the hearts and minds of the local community. Items donated included Qurans, religious and learning materials, clothes, foot wears, assorted drinks and water.

The Commanding Officer, Lt Col M Mfum in his remarks indicated that, as part of CIMIC responsibilities, the Battalion saw it necessary to reach out to the Muslim community by providing some basic essentials needed to go about their religious duties effectively. He also indicated that it is his hope the donation strengthens the existing relationship between the Muslim community and the Battalion.

Receiving the items, the Sheik of the IDP Camp Mosque, Yassin Gatluak Tuak expressed his appreciation to the Battalion for reaching out to them at a time when floods are making it difficult for them to go about their duties. The Imam reiterated that they hope to receive more attention and similar gesture from GHANBATT as the year unfolds.

The Women’s leader of the Mosque, Madam Ibtiesam Abuotueth commended GHANBATT for being a part of their Muslim family especially during the Ramadan and Eid celebrations and further applauded GHANBATT's female peacekeepers for the essential role they play in keeping peace in South Sudan. Madam Ibtiesam also made a plea to GHANBATT to assist them in vocational training of their women and children to make them resourceful in their community.

FORCES SERGEANT MAJOR PAYS MAIDEN VISIT TO 2 GARRISON

The Forces Sergeant Major (FSM) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Chief Warrant Officer (CWO), Addo Daniel paid his maiden visit to 2 Garrison on Monday 24 January, 2022.

The FSM paid a courtesy call on the Garrison Commander, Commodore Samuel Walker at the Western Naval Command, the Flag Officer Fleet, Commodore Atiayao, the Air Force Base Commander, Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frimpong and the Commanding Officer of the 2 Infantry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Abass Atuluk.

In his interaction with troops of the Garrison at the Richard Napoleon Yawvi Ashley-Lassen Hangar at the Air Force Base (Takoradi), the FSM charged troops to be disciplined and professional in the discharge of their duties adding that any act of indiscipline would not be tolerated. He further admonished troops to be cautious in their use of social media.

OPENING CEREMONY HELD FOR EMT TRAINING COURSE AT 37 MILITARY HOSPITAL

The 37 Military Hospital in collaboration with the National Ambulance Service (NAS) has on Monday 24 January 2022 held an opening ceremony for the third batch of the Military Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training course at the Warrant Officers’ and Senior Non Commissioned Officers’ Mess of the Hospital. The 24-month course is geared towards the training of 73 students as full time EMTs.

The Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, Brig Gen Nii Adjah Obodai in his remarks said that the role of Medical Technicians cannot be overlooked in health care delivery and in recognition of their importance the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has embraced the need to train their own EMTs. He added that GAF in collaboration with the NAS commenced the training of the first batch of EMTs in 2013 with a total of 62 technicians who passed out in 2014. He further stated that the second batch of 79 Technicians EMTs completed their training in 2016. Brig Gen Nii Adjah Obodai stressed that the hospital is honoured to be hosting another batch of trainees. He thanked the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NAS, Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah for his support towards the training of the EMTs.

Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah commended Military High Command and NAS for their efforts in making the programme a success.

Present at the occasion were; Commanding Officer 37 Military Hospital, Col Azumah Bugri, Director Nursing Ghana Armed Forces Medical Services, Col Rex Adzagba, Chief Nursing Officers of the hospital, some senior officers of the hospital and representatives from National Ambulance Service.

17 confirmed dead, 59 injured in Bogoso huge explosion

At least 17 people have been confirmed dead after Thursday afternoon’s huge explosion at Appiatse in the Bogoso area of the Western Region.

A statement issued by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said at least 59 people were injured, some of whom were in a critical condition.

A vehicle carrying mining explosives which was traveling from Tarkwa to Chirano collided with a motorcycle at Appiatse near Bogoso.

Images from the accident scene showed a large plume of black smoke rising above destroyed buildings and scattered debris as residents called for help.

Graphic videos showed mutilated bodies of victims. A large crater can also be seen beside a road.

The Ghana Police Service and other emergency service providers have activated a full emergency recovery exercise after the huge explosion on Thursday afternoon (January 20, 2022).

Videos emerging from the scene of the accident show dismembered bodies scattered on the road.

Many buildings have also collapsed in the area trapping some people.

The explosion reportedly went very far causing extensive damage in the area.

Police situational report

A police situational report said the accident happened at about 1:25pm.

A policeman, D/Cpl Isaac Kamanim of Fi****ms Unit/Tarkwa was es**rting explosives from MAXAM Company, Tarkwa, in a DAF van with registration number WR 2252-18 driven by Alfred Pappoe to Chirano Gold Mines in the Western North Region.

At a section of the road between Bogoso and Bawdie, a motor cycle rider from the opposite direction ran under the van carrying the explosives.

The motor cycle caught fire, ignited the van which burst into flames and exploded.

The driver sustained deep cut on the head and was rushed to the Tarkwa Government Hospital.

The Police es**rt escaped unhurt.

The motor bike rider is feared dead.

An extensive damage was caused to a nearby ECG transformer.

Also a number of nearby buildings were razed down, that portion of the road was damaged, some vehicles plying that road were damaged, passengers and inhabitants sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The main road linking Tarkwa and Ayamfuri has been blocked momentarily with no vehicle crossing from each side, Graphic Online's Western Regional correspondent, Kobla Dotsey Aklorbortu reports.

Some vehicles have been torn into pieces, Aklorbortu said.

About 100 vehicles had their windscreen shattered.

What caused the accident?

The driver of the transporting vehicle, upon reaching the area, collided with a motorcycle.

After stepping out, the driver saw fire in the vehicle and rushed to alert people in the community to run to safety.

The fire escalated and the explosives in the vehicle detonated killing many and causing extensive damage.

According to our reporter, many people have also sustained severe injuries.

Ministry of Information statement

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said the government received the tragic news of an explosion at Appiatse, along the Bogoso- Bawdie road in the Western Region, that led to the destruction of some parts of the town, and resulted in injuries and the death of some residents.

Preliminary reports indicate that there was an accident involving a truck conveying explosive material for a mining company, a motorcycle, and a third vehicle close to an electricity transformer, leading to the explosion.

Upon the instructions of the President of the Republic, a National Emergency Response Mechanism was activated immediately. Personnel from the Police Service, Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Health Service, National Ambulance Service, the Municipal Authority, and residents have all been involved in providing support.

Additional personnel and resources have been dispatched to the community to support the response effort.

An alternative route has been created to facilitate the movement of stranded vehicles plying that route.

All hospitals within the vicinity are being used to treat injured persons, and an evacuation plan has been activated to move those in critical condition to medical facilities in Accra so they can get the needed assistance.

To forestall a secondary explosion, a joint team of police and military explosion experts has been deployed to examine the situation and put in place the requisite measures.

As at 17:00 hours, a total of seventeen (17) people have, sadly, been confirmed dead, and fifty-nine (59) injured persons had been rescued, bringing to seventy-six (76) the number of persons known, so far, to have been affected by the tragedy.

Out of the fifty-nine (59) injured persons, forty-two (42) are receiving treatment and some in critical condition.

Early reports indicate that several houses and structures in sections of the town have been destroyed and plans have been put in place to ensure that stranded community members are catered for in the coming days.

We would want to urge the public to remain calm and obtain regular updates from the national emergency response team.

At 11:00am tomorrow [Friday] the emergency response team will provide updates from the scene of the incident.

Government commends the Police Service, Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Health Service, National Ambulance Service, the Municipal Authority, health professionals in the medical facilities within the vicinity, and local residents for their assistance so far.

Government further expresses deep condolences to the families of the deceased and sends best wishes to the injured for their speedy recovery.

As relief and containment efforts continue, and the situation is brought under considerable control, President Akufo-Addo will visit Appiatse to assess the effectiveness of the response effort.

President Akufo-Addo's reaction

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commenting on the accident said "I have just received a briefing on the circumstances that led to an explosion in Apiate near Bogoso, in the Western Region, resulting in the loss of lives and the destruction of properties belonging to residents."

"It is a truly sad, unfortunate and tragic incident, and I extend, on behalf of Government, deep condolences to the families of the deceased, and I wish the injured a speedy recovery."

"The Police, Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are co-ordinating efforts to contain the situation, and I have also instructed NADMO to see to it that rapid relief is brought to residents of the town.

"Government will spare no effort to ensure a rapid return to a situation of normalcy for residents of Apiate."

CDS HONOURS TWO RETIRED SOLDIERS AT MATS

The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama has honoured two ex-soldiers for their various achievements and performance while serving in the Ghana Armed Forces.

The immediate past Forces Sergeant Major (FSM) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Ex Chief Warrant Officer Barker Ramous and Ex WOI Ayizagah Joseph were on Friday 14 January 2020 duly honored by renaming the Military Academy and Training Schools Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers’ Mess and Junior Ranks’ Mess after them respectfully. The two renovated and refurbished messes are now called Barker Ramous Mess and Ayizangah Mess.

The event took place at the Military Academy and Training School (MATS), Whistler Barracks, Teshie.

The occasion also saw the commissioning of the newly constructed 50-unit ablution facility at the MATS students lines, the renovated facilities of the No 1 Cookhouse, dining hall and the Blay and Adinkra blocks with expanded ablution units by the Chief of Defence Staff. Vice Admiral Seth Amoama also commissioned the Point 5 Awards Centre.

In his address at the Barker Ramous Mess, Vice Admiral Amoama said the Point 5 Awards Centre had been established as a one-stop shop with the sole aim of making military uniforms and accoutrement, saloon and tailoring services, sports wears and equipment and communication services easily accessible and affordable to all ranks and their families in the barracks.

He disclosed that the ongoing restructuring of the Ghana Armed Forces has led to the establishment of the Army Training Command (ATRAC) and that very soon MATS command would be re-designated as the Ghana Armed Forces Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) and the Ghana Military Academy would become autonomous.

Speaking on the Honorees, CDS stated that former FSM, Ex-CWO Barker Kwame Ramous had shown remarkable commitment to the Ghana Armed Forces and that he was very proud to have renamed the WO’s and SNCO’s mess after him in recognition of his outstanding performance. Ex-WOI Ayizangah Joseph, who was a Physical Training Instructor (PTI), was commended for his remarkable contribution towards youth development through academics, sports, gymnastic training and mentoring.
