Last week, we took a few hours away from our desks to enjoy some sunshine, good food and, most importantly, each other's company.

In recruitment, our days are often spent helping businesses solve challenges, supporting candidates through career moves and keeping up with a fast-moving market. Taking time out together is a great reminder that, at its heart, our business is all about people.

As we chatted about life, work and everything in between, one topic kept coming up: the challenges many local employers are facing this summer. From holiday cover and stretched teams to creating opportunities for young people entering the workforce, there is a lot for businesses to balance right now.

We’re looking for a hands-on IT pro who goes beyond “just fixing tickets” – someone who spots the root cause, strengthens systems, and takes real pride in keeping everything running smoothly.
This is a standalone lead role in a small, growing tech team, so your impact will be immediate.

You’ll be:
* Managing and improving client IT systems (not just reacting to issues)
* Working across Microsoft 365, Active Directory, WAN/LAN & firewalls
* Leading “go live” support and ensuring smooth deployments
* Acting as the go-to escalation point for complex technical problems
* Working directly with the MD on new tech ideas and R&D

We’re looking for someone who:
* Is a natural problem-solver with a “fix it properly” mindset
* Has solid Microsoft 365 / AD / Exchange experience
* Can explain technical issues in simple, human language
* Takes ownership and thrives in a varied, fast-moving role

A small, friendly business in York is hiring a Finance & Operations Co-ordinator to take real ownership of the day-to-day financial running of the company.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll be doing everything from invoicing, payroll input and bank reconciliations, through to keeping cash flow healthy and the office running smoothly.

* £25,740 – £28,567.50 FTE (£13.20 – £14.65/hr)
* Part-time (around 20 hrs, flexible days) – with potential to increase
* 1 day remote working (after training)
* 28 days holiday + pension + profit share + progression

AI is everywhere in recruitment right now — and in many ways, it’s a positive shift. It’s helping businesses move faster, streamline processes, and take away a lot of the admin that can slow hiring down. On the surface, it feels like a no-brainer.

But it does raise an important question… at what point does efficiency start to come at the cost of effectiveness?

Because hiring has never just been about process. It’s about people. And while AI can absolutely support things like scheduling, screening, and managing high volumes of applications, it can’t fully understand the human side of hiring — the things that actually determine whether someone will succeed in a role. Their personality, how they communicate, what motivates them, how they show up day to day.

We’re starting to see a bit of a pattern emerge. When processes become too automated, candidates can look perfect on paper — but not quite land once they’re in the business. And in a more balanced market, where hiring decisions really matter, that gap becomes more noticeable (and more costly).

There’s also the candidate experience to think about. People are increasingly aware of when they’re interacting with a process rather than a person — and for stronger candidates especially, that can impact how they engage. Because ultimately, people don’t accept jobs based on efficiency alone. They accept them based on how they feel throughout the process — the conversations, the connection, the understanding.

The businesses getting it right at the moment aren’t removing the human element — they’re protecting it. They’re using AI where it adds value, but being much more intentional about where human judgement, conversation and relationship-building still need to sit.
