Can you spot ‘Stickability’ in an interview?

It’s easy for a candidate to tell you they’re reliable, resilient and hardworking, but how do you actually prove it?

The right competency-based questions can take you beyond the polished interview answers and uncover how someone really responds when things get difficult, when they have to learn something new, or when they’re expected to see a commitment through.

We’ve put together 3 simple questions you can use at your next interview, plus the follow-up question we think can reveal even more.

Because sometimes, the best evidence of someone’s potential isn’t on their CV; it’s in what they’ve done when things haven’t gone to plan.

What if the best person for your next hire isn’t the one with the best CV?

As we head towards Q4, we’ve been thinking about something that doesn’t always show up on a CV, but can make a huge difference to a business:
'Stickability'.

That combination of reliability, resilience, attitude and willingness to learn. The person who turns up, gets stuck in, asks questions and keeps going when things get busy.

Because sometimes, potential + attitude + 'stickability' can be far more powerful than ticking every box on a job description.

We’ve been exploring why looking beyond experience could be the key to building a stronger team for Q4 and why now is the time to start thinking about it.

As universities and colleges welcome a new generation of students to our wonderful city, and graduates begin thinking about what comes next, we’d love to encourage our local business community to think about giving someone their first step through the door.

That could be a part-time student looking for work alongside their studies. It could be a graduate looking for that all-important first opportunity. Or it could be someone who doesn’t have years of experience on their CV , but has something just as valuable:

Stickability.

The willingness to turn up, get stuck in, learn, listen, ask questions and keep going when something is new or challenging.

Because when you’re hiring someone at the beginning of their career, you’re not simply hiring the experience they have today.

You’re hiring their potential.
* Their enthusiasm
* Their attitude
* Their willingness to learn
* Their reliability
* Their communication skills
* Their ability to work with others
* Their fresh perspective
* And a whole stack of transferable skills they may have developed through education, volunteering, sport, previous part-time work, caring responsibilities or simply navigating life.
Sometimes the best person for the job isn't the one with the longest CV.
It’s the one who is hungry to learn and determined to make a difference.

So, York businesses, if you have a part-time role, entry-level position, internship or opportunity that could be a first step for someone…Why not give them a chance? You might just discover your next brilliant employee.

And if you’re a student or graduate looking for that first opportunity, don’t underestimate what you already have to offer.

If we can help with any aspect of your hiring process, please drop us a message!

About to start university in our magical city of York?
First of all… welcome!

Whether you’ve chosen York because of the history, the Minster, the Shambles, the river, the amazing student life (or simply because you fell in love with the place!), you’re about to start a very exciting chapter. And for many students, one of the first things on the list is finding that part-time job to help fund uni life.

So, from a recruitment agency that sees hundreds of applications, here are a few tips to help you stand out:
*Don’t just send the same CV everywhere. Think about what the employer is actually looking for and make sure your CV highlights the skills and experience that are relevant to the role.
*Tell them what you can bring. You might not have lots of work experience yet, but you’ll have plenty of transferable skills. Teamwork, communication, reliability, organisation, customer service, responsibility and time management all count.
*Please don’t overlook your cover letter! A good cover letter can make a HUGE difference. Your CV tells an employer what you’ve done, your cover letter gives you the opportunity to explain why you want the job, why you’re interested in their business and why they should meet you. Even if a cover letter isn’t specifically requested, a short, well-written one can show initiative and enthusiasm, and immediately set you apart from the applications that simply arrive with a CV attached.
*Check your social media. Yes, employers really do look. Make sure your public profiles give the impression you’d be someone they’d be happy to have representing their business.
*Be realistic about your availability. University comes first, so be honest about your timetable and the hours you can genuinely commit to. Employers value reliability more than promises you can’t keep.
And finally…
*Don’t underestimate yourself. Your first job in York might be part-time, temporary or completely unrelated to your degree — but it could give you confidence, new skills, fantastic friendships and experience that will stay with you long after graduation.

So, as you arrive in York and begin this exciting new chapter, remember:
Your degree matters. But so does the experience you gain along the way.
Good luck, enjoy every minute and welcome to York!

GCSE Results Day!

A huge congratulations to everyone receiving their GCSE results today — especially those who got the grades they were hoping for. You’ve worked hard, and you should be incredibly proud of yourselves!

And if your results weren’t quite what you’d hoped for, remember this: one set of results does not define your future. There is always a next step, another route and another opportunity waiting for you.

Be proud of how far you’ve come, celebrate the wins, and don’t be afraid to ask “what’s next?”

Congratulations to everyone — you’ve got this!

When searching for a new job, it’s easy to focus solely on online job boards. But some of the best opportunities come through the people you already know.

Your network could include:* Friends and family* Former colleagues and managers* University or college contacts* Professional connections on LinkedIn* Recruiters who know your skills and career aspirations

Don’t be afraid to let people know you’re exploring new opportunities. A simple conversation or introduction could open doors you didn’t even know existed.

And remember, networking isn’t just about asking for a job, it’s about building genuine relationships, sharing experiences and staying connected with people in your industry.

At One to One Recruitment, we’re proud to be part of our candidates’ professional networks. Whether you’re actively looking or simply thinking about your next career move, we’re always happy to have a confidential chat and offer honest advice.
