Managing the Silence of the Job Application Process
A new client I was talking with today told me he had sent out over 30 applications in the last few weeks, but had zero response, not even a rejection, literally NOTHING! Despondent doesn't even cover it, especially as the one response he did have was a request to answer a personality test, which he did and that was when it again went silent, no confirmation they even received it!
Come on recruiters, how would you feel if it was you on the other end, if it was you who had put blood, sweat and tears into writing the perfect CV, tailored your cover letter, and hit "submit" with hope, then...
No response, feedback, or acknowledgment, just… nothing.
It’s a harsh reality that many job seekers face today, and it’s down right emotionally draining. You start questioning yourself,“Was my CV good enough? Did they even read it?", or worse, "Is it me, am I unemployable?"
It’s not you, this is no excuse but companies receive hundreds of applications, and recruitment processes are often slow, inconsistent, or poorly communicated. But while you can’t control how organisations operate, you can take steps to bring some noise back into your job search.
So, what can you do?
🔹 Follow up (but strategically)
A polite follow-up a week or two after applying shows initiative, but keep it short, professional, and to the point. If you have a recruiter’s email, use it, if not then LinkedIn can be your best friend.
🔹 Network, don’t just apply
The strongest applications often come with a human connection, so engage with people in your industry, comment on posts, and connect with hiring managers and recruiters. A job application with a referral or introduction can bypass the silent void.
🔹 Diversify your approach
If you’re only relying on online applications, expand your strategy by attending industry events, reaching out to former colleagues, and exploring direct applications to hiring managers.
🔹 Keep momentum going
Silence doesn’t mean stop, keep applying, keep learning, keep refining your approach. The more doors you knock on, the better your chances of one opening.
🔹 Protect your mindset
Rejections (or silence) don’t define your worth, set daily goals, celebrate small wins, and step away from the screen when you need to, you are more than an unanswered application.
And most importantly… keep going.
The silence is tough, but the right opportunity will come, it may not arrive in the way you expect, but every step forward, every application, every connection, every conversation is part of your journey to getting there.
