THE RECRUITMENT INDUSTRY HAS A HIRING PROBLEM…

Not because there aren’t enough recruiters.

Because we’ve stopped creating them.

Everyone is saying the same thing:

“We’re having our best quarter in years.”
“Growth is back.”
“But we can’t find the right people.”

Then you look at the brief:

2–5 years’ experience.
Proven billing history.
Exact market experience.
Ready to hit the ground running.

And those roles stay open for months.

Growth stalls.

Frustration builds.

And the search continues for the “perfect” recruiter who doesn’t exist in the numbers required.

So the real question is simple:

Where are all the 2–5 year recruiters supposed to come from?

We stopped building them.

During Covid, trainee hiring slowed.

In 2022, there was a surge.

By 2023, many had already left as the market tightened again.

And now?

We’re short of the very people we refuse to train.

AI loves black and white.

Keyword match.
Years of experience.
Specific job titles.
Tick boxes.

Many internal recruitment teams are starting to hire the same way.

The result?

They reject anyone who doesn’t perfectly fit the brief on paper.

But recruitment has never been black and white.

It’s grey.

Some of the best performers placed weren’t the obvious candidates.

They lacked one skill.
They came from a different sector.
They hadn’t done the exact job before.

On paper, they were a risk.

In person, they were outstanding.

They had the attitude, drive, personality and determination to succeed.

The problem is that AI can’t always see potential.

And neither can recruiters who behave like AI.

If your recruitment process is simply matching CVs against a job description, why do you need a recruiter at all?

The value of a recruiter isn’t identifying the perfect candidate.

It’s identifying the candidate who could become perfect.

The ones who want the opportunity.
The ones who will prove themselves.
The ones who come alive in a face-to-face interview.
