Raina Brands, Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior, and Isabel Fernandez-Mateo, Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, London Business School write for Forbes about this and some of the other reasons why we see this occur at the top levels of corporations, as well as what companies can do in order to attract, support, and retain its female talent.

There is no question that leadership takes courage, and a willingness to stand up for yourself. Some may view this as being cold, but if a leader wavers, the team suffers.

The late Baroness Margaret Thatcher, also known as the 'Iron Lady', knew this as well as anyone could. Being the first female British Prime Minister, it fell on her to lead the country from a position of power that many never expected to see a woman hold. Any sign of weakness would have undermined her authority in the eyes of some. However, she never wavered, and lead with the strength she knew she had.

As 2021 progresses, it seems as if employers are finally on the path to regular recruiting once again. Although the danger of COVID-19 is still around, the hopefulness some feel regarding the situation has helped HR leaders pursue new talent.

Few know how important it is to take a shot better than Wayne Gretzky. The man considered the greatest ice hockey player of all time understands the need for taking risks, and what the potential outcome of avoiding them is. It's a balancing act of course, as you don't want the puck to be handed off to the enemy team, but never taking the shot out of fear of that happening can be just as harmful as letting them have it.

Imagine you're selling a product to two strangers. One buys it in person, but the other buys it online. If your product is bad, the individual who bought it in-person would tell their friends and family, but that would likely be the end of it. The other would write a negative review on a website for all the world to see. Unlike the first person's words, the second person's words are immortal - they will live on the internet and be seen by people for generations to come. There is perhaps no better example of why quality is vital in a product in today's digital age.

Jeff Bezos knows this well. Currently the world's wealthiest man, the Amazon founder understands how powerful word of mouth is. Companies wouldn't be successful if clients and customers didn't talk well about them.
