** If you struggled or struggling at school
Your Future Is More Than Your Grades **
When I left school, my grades were… well, average. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew I needed to start somewhere. At 18, I secured a job waitering in a casino in Huddersfield. It wasn’t glamorous, but I worked hard, showed up on time, and made sure I was reliable and respectful.
After a few months, an opportunity came up to train as a croupier. They didn’t ask to see my CV, and they didn’t care about my grades. All they saw was someone who worked hard, was eager to learn, and could be trusted to get the job done. I grabbed the chance and threw myself into learning the role.
Long story short, I ended up having a successful 13-year career in the casino industry, eventually progressing to Casino Manager on board cruise ships. Not bad for someone with no grades.
That journey taught me something that has stuck with me ever since: you don’t need perfect grades to build a successful career. What truly matters is your attitude, determination, and willingness to grow.
Now, years later, I run my own recruitment business. I’m not the most naturally intelligent person, but I’ve learnt that intelligence isn’t everything. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
That’s the key: showing up, putting in the effort, and refusing to give up.
Looking back, I see how much importance society places on grades as the ultimate measure of success. But grades are just a moment in time. They don’t define who you are or what you’re capable of achieving.
Here’s what really matters:
• Be dependable. Do what you say you’re going to do.
• Work hard. Effort and consistency will always set you apart.
• Stay curious. Be eager to learn and grow, no matter your starting point.
• Believe in yourself. Don’t let anyone—or your own doubts—limit what you can achieve.
If you didn’t achieve the grades you’d hoped for, don’t let that hold you back. Your potential is not determined by exams or test scores. It’s shaped by what you choose to do next. Whether it’s stepping into your first job, pursuing a passion, or starting a business, your commitment to progress matters far more than where you begin.
Success is about persistence, resilience, and growth. The most valuable skills—like adaptability, determination, and hard work—can’t be measured by an exam. These are the qualities that drive you forward, no matter the challenges.
So, keep going, keep learning, and don’t stop striving. Your grades don’t dictate your future. Your grit does.
