"We need someone with five years' experience."

It's something we hear regularly when discussing new vacancies with businesses.

Experience is important, but it's often not the thing that determines whether someone becomes a successful long-term hire.

One of the most rewarding parts of recruitment is hearing from people long after they've started their new role.

Recently, Helen received a message from a candidate she had helped place a while ago.

What they remembered wasn't the interview process or the job offer.

It was that when things didn't initially go their way, Helen still believed in their potential and gave them another opportunity to show what they could do.

They told her that they'd never forgotten it.

Recruitment isn't always about finding the most obvious match on paper.

Changing jobs can feel exciting, but it can also feel quite overwhelming for people too.

That’s something I always try to remember throughout the recruitment process.

Behind every CV is a person trying to make the right decision for their future, which is why support, communication and reassurance matter so much along the way.

The recruitment process says a lot about a business.

Right now, strong candidates are often involved in multiple opportunities at the same time. But what increasingly influences their decision is not just the role itself, it’s how the process feels throughout.

Are they kept informed?

Is communication consistent?

Do they feel confident in the business and the people they’re meeting?

The businesses seeing the strongest hiring outcomes are usually the ones with a process that feels organised, supportive and well-managed from start to finish.

A recent hiring poll shared by Helen sparked some interesting conversations around what businesses believe is the biggest challenge when trying to attract the right people.

Salary naturally featured heavily, and of course it plays an important part, but many hiring challenges begin much earlier than that.

Often, it comes down to how the opportunity is positioned in the market.

The strongest candidates are usually already employed. They are looking at the full picture before making a move: the opportunity itself, the environment, leadership, flexibility, long-term prospects and whether the role genuinely feels worth changing jobs for.

That’s why recruitment is rarely just about advertising a vacancy.

It’s about understanding how a business is perceived externally, what candidates in the local market value, and how to present an opportunity in a way that attracts the right people from the outset.

This is a huge part of how Helen works with businesses across the ME region, taking time to understand the wider picture before going to market.

Sometimes, small changes in positioning can completely change the quality of response.
