Today, on Anti-Slavery Day, we are reminded of a dark reality that still exists in our world: modern-day slavery.

This isn't a topic to be swept under the rug or addressed just one day a year—it demands our attention every day.

No one should be forced to live in fear or under someone else's control. Every person, everywhere, deserves freedom.

As leaders and business owners, particularly in recruitment, we carry a profound responsibility. We must be vigilant in the fight against exploitation.

Laura Clark explains that while some potential signs of modern-day slavery are subtle, knowing them can make a difference:

🛂 Does the person lack access to their own identification/right-to-work documents?

💷 Are they asking to be paid into someone else's bank account?

🚗 Are they dropped off and picked up from work by someone else that doesn’t appear to be a friend/family member?

👜 Do they have very few personal belongings?

🫥 Are they reluctant to interact or form friendships with others around them?

If you suspect someone may be trapped in this situation, it's crucial not to confront them directly. Instead, act by reporting your concerns to the relevant authorities, like the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA): gla.gov.uk

You can also contact the Modern Slavery Helpline: Call 08000 121 700 or report online at modernslaveryhelpline.org. The helpline is available 24 hours a day.

The fight against slavery starts with awareness, but it can’t end there.

Let us each take a stand—not just today, but every day—to protect the freedom and dignity of every human being.

No one should be invisible. No one should be voiceless. Together, we can make a difference.
