Covid-19: Parents with childcare issues 'must get right to furlough'

"I think we can agree it is a tricky time for everyone involved, but the government getting involved in the contractual relationship I think would send the wrong message. Employers need to think practically and even commercially which should still bring the right support to the business. As an employer you must ask yourself, what is the possibility of the job being done properly when a parent is trying to home school? All circumstances are very different and consideration needs to be given to the ages of the children, the school support system that particular employee has etc etc. So rather than a hard and fast rule of “we furlough home schooling parents” or “ we can’t furlough a home schooling parent because that job and he/she has to do it”, how about some practical common sense? Ask yourself as you would in any other commercial sense?

1 Is the job likely to be done to the standard we need?

2 Is there flexibility or hours which will uphold the standard at certain times?

3 Who else can do certain elements of the job in the company which would achieve the standard we need?

Discussion and communication with your employee to understand their typical day with home schooling and firstly its effect on work and then together what changes can be made to accommodate this. Furloughing isn’t always the way to go in order to deliver for everyone.

Build a culture of trust where you all want to make it work and be fair in your approach. I think there are very few employers who don’t understand that home schooling is a full time job and for someone to do their full time job isn’t a reasonable expectation. We are in a very different world, lets not hide from it because we are trapped in the “furlough”v or “not furlough” led option. Embrace it, discuss it and look at all the options as you would with any and every valued employee who needed support."

Labour says legal duty on employers to grant requests would ease strain on families in lockdown.
