The most important meeting of the week. ☕🍪

It’s National Biscuit Day, which felt like the perfect excuse for a proper tea break.

In the working world, we deal with complex issues every day, but few topics spark more passionate debate than biscuits.

Are you firmly in the classic Digestives camp, or is it all about the Chocolate Hobnobs?

Jokes aside, those informal moments matter. A ten minute break, a chat in the kitchen, and a shared laugh can do more for team connection than another meeting in the diary.

We're big believers that small things, like making time for breaks and keeping the biscuit tin stocked, help create workplaces where people feel comfortable, connected and valued.

So, over to you: What’s the go to biscuit in your office? And be honest… are you a dunker?

Step away from the inbox ☀️🍦

May has been busy and the second bank holiday is just what we need!

Enjoy the downtime. Whether you're heading out for a walk or catching up with family, make the most of the laptop being shut and take the break. It’s the best way to make sure you and the team have renewed energy come Tuesday.

The emails can wait. See you all tomorrow ✌️

Is your most relied on employee also a single point of failure? 🚩

Every business has one.

The person who knows where everything is, never misses a deadline, and is the go to when a question comes up.

They're a huge asset. But from a people and risk perspective, over reliance on one individual can create vulnerability.

If valuable “how to” knowledge lives mainly in someone’s head rather than in shared processes, the business isn't as resilient as it could be. And that’s not a reflection on the employee, it’s a systems issue.

If key team members took a proper holiday, were unwell, or moved on, would work continue smoothly?

This month’s challenge: Try a simple knowledge check.

Ask yourself: If one key person was away for two weeks, could the team carry on confidently?

If the answer is “not really,” it may be time to invest in clearer documentation, shared processes and knowledge sharing, which in turn protects both your people and your business.

Happy International HR Day! A day to recognise the profession that sits at the heart of every workplace.

The theme for 2026 is "Empower People to Lead Change." For us, that’s exactly what good HR is about. Contracts and compliance are needed and we do love a well-drafted policy but HR is more than that! It’s about giving business owners, managers and employees the confidence to handle whatever the working world throws at them.

We're helping our clients navigate the latest rule changes and building cultures where people actually want to show up on a Monday morning. We're proud to be the partners that help your people (and your business) thrive.

To all our fellow HR professionals out there, happy International HR Day to you too! How are you celebrating today?

Is low staff turnover always a good thing? 📉🤔

On paper, it can look positive. Recruitment costs are down and teams appear stable.
But in an uncertain economy, people may also stay in roles they've outgrown because it feels safer to do so.

That can sometimes result in teams who are present but not fully engaged.

A few things to reflect on:
- Focus on internal development - could a role be adjusted or expanded to offer fresh challenge without someone needing to leave?

- Pay attention to changes in energy - if previously high performing employees have gone quiet, it may be a sign they feel settled rather than stimulated. Not disengaged, but in need of renewed purpose.

Use 1 to 1s intentionally, Try asking: “What’s one thing that would make your work feel more meaningful over the next six months?”

Retention matters, but engagement matters more.

If you've noticed a dip in energy or motivation across your team, let’s have a conversation about how to address it positively.

Is your team using AI? (and do you have a policy for it yet?) 🤖

AI is a hot topic at the moment. It’s helping teams work faster and get more done, but as a HR team, we're noticing a gap. The tech is moving at lightning speed, but many companies haven't written the rules for how it should and shouldn't be used yet.

If your team is experimenting with AI, here are three things we’re advising our clients to look at right now:

🔹 Data & Privacy: It’s tempting to put a quick summary of a meeting or a report into an AI tool. But if it’s a public version, we need to be thinking about where that data is going and how it could be used? We're helping businesses set clear rules to keep their company and client data safe.

🔹 Fairness in Hiring: If you're using AI to help screen CVs, it needs human oversight to ensure you stay on the right side of the Equality Act!

🔹 Opening the Conversation: Most "AI anxiety" within teams comes from a lack of communication. We find that when business leaders are transparent about how AI is being used to help roles rather than replace them, morale is higher and people are more likely to embrace the change rather than fight it.

Our recommendation is not to ignore it or ban it, but manage it. An "AI Acceptable Use Policy" is one of the most important things you can add to your handbook in 2026.

If you're not sure where to start with yours, get in touch. We're here to help you get the balance right.

Has your team started using AI tools yet? Let us know what’s working for you! 👇

Awareness is great, action is better!

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, and if your LinkedIn feed looks like ours, you've probably seen a lot of "it’s okay not to be okay" posts. The theme for 2026 is Action and at Spire HR, we know that awareness alone doesn't fix a burnt-out workforce.

Supporting your staff year-round is what actually makes a difference; a poster in the breakroom once a year doesn't.

For us, "Action" looks like:

✅ Reviewing Workloads to check if "to-do" lists are actually achievable in your teams working week.
✅ Training Managers to give them the confidence to spot the early signs that someone is struggling before it becomes a long-term sick leave issue.
✅ Encouraging the team to use their "Out of Office" and discouraging the "always-on" culture of late-night emails.
✅ Providing solutions like Employee Assistance Programmes or flexible working.

Talking about mental health is great, building a culture where people feel safe and supported is harder but worth it!

What practical steps are you taking to support your team? We'd love to hear what’s working for you.

Today is World Password Day, and a reminder that protecting your business starts with protecting your people.

Scams and "spoof" emails are getting more sophisticated and to protect your company you need to educate your team.

The "basics" have changed, it's no longer about adding a capital letter or a digit.

Things to consider:

🔐 A long string of random words (a passphrase) is much harder for a bot to crack than a short, "complex" password. Think Horse-Blue-Rocket-Sky instead of Sky1!.
🔐 Reusing passwords is the biggest risk. If one site is breached, they are all at risk!
🔐 No one can remember 50 unique passwords. Providing a company-approved password manager is one of the best tools you can give your team.
🔐 Multi-factor authentication is an additional barrier that stops a scammer in their tracks.

Encourage your team to use these same habits for their personal accounts, too. When your people have good habits for their private digital life, those good habits naturally carry over into the workplace.

By providing the right resources you can protect your data and help your team feel more confident when working online.

If your staff handbook needs updating, we can help you get those policies in place.
