October marks Black History Month, a time to celebrate the resilience, achievements, and contributions of the Black community across the UK and globally. ✊🏾

This years’ theme, 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride', highlights this legacy while providing an opportunity for employers to reflect on how they can continue to support diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace.

While progress has been made, data indicates there are opportunities to further strengthen representation, career development, and inclusion for Black employees.

💼 72% Black, Black British, Caribbean or African individuals feel they have not got a job due to discrimination of some kind during the recruitment process.

👔 39% Nearly two in five (39%) people of Black, Black British, Caribbean or African ethnicity reported experiencing work-related discrimination on the grounds of their race or ethnicity.

🎓 40% Ethnically diverse people are more likely to have a university degree, yet nearly 40% of Black African graduates are in non-graduate jobs compared to 20% of White graduates.

£25bn Race at Work research suggests that race equality could boost the UK economy by £24 billion a year – that’s 1.3% of GDP or £481 million every week.

What can employers do?
• Implement anti-racism training
• Promote diverse leadership
• Review recruitment practices
• Foster an inclusive culture
• Create platforms for open dialogue about race and inclusion
• Celebrate Black history and contributions year-round and not through tokenism.

In 2025, the UK STEM workforce (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is undergoing significant change, driven by rapid technological advancements, rising global competition, and increased demand for highly skilled professionals. 🔬🌱

Despite this growth, diversity remains a major challenge, with women and historically disadvantaged groups continuing to be significantly underrepresented across STEM fields.

➡️ 725,000 new STEM jobs are needed to support the transition to net zero.

➡️ 19% of all UK jobs are in engineering & technology, equating to around 6.4 million people

➡️ 49% of engineering and technology businesses report difficulties with recruitment because of skills shortages.

➡️ 27.6% of the core STEM workforce are women, representing over 1.4 million women across the UK. Although the numbers are slowly improving, with the latest data representing a record high, women remain underrepresented in many areas.

➡️ 11% of people working in STEM roles are disabled, compared with around 14% across the wider UK workforce. This under-representation suggests that disabled people face additional barriers to accessing and progressing in STEM careers.

What can employers do?
• Prioritise upskilling and reskilling
• Benchmark remuneration & EVP
• Launch fast-impact DEI initiatives
• Develop clear career pathways
• Build education partnerships
• Stay legally informed with sectoral and hiring developments.
