I was chatting to someone about their CV this week and it made me think about personal profiles.

They're only a few lines at the top of your CV, but they can say so much about you.

I read loads of CVs every week and it's amazing how many personal profiles sound exactly the same. They're often
full of buzzwords, but don't really tell me anything about the person behind the application.

I always love reading the ones that feel a bit more real. The ones where you get a sense of who someone is, what they enjoy doing and what they're looking for next.

It doesn't have to be perfect. It just needs to sound like you.

It's a small part of your CV, but definitely one that's worth a second look.

Thinking about changing careers? Don't overlook your transferable skills.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people believing they have to start from scratch because they've never done that job before.

The reality? You probably have far more relevant experience than you think.

Skills like communication, problem-solving, organisation, relationship building, project management and leadership are valuable in almost every industry. The key is knowing how to highlight them on your CV in a way that relates to the role you're applying for.

Your CV shouldn't just list what you've done. It should show employers what you're capable of doing next.

If you're looking to change career paths, don't sell yourself short. Sometimes it's not about gaining more experience, it's about presenting the experience you already have in the right way.

Here's something I wish more candidates knew.

You don't have to meet 100% of the job description.

Many employers are looking for someone who has most of the skills and the right attitude, not someone who's done every single task before.

If you can demonstrate how your experience transfers and show you're willing to learn, don't rule yourself out before the employer has had the chance to consider you.

One of the biggest barriers I see isn't a lack of experience. It's people talking themselves out of applying.

But they shouldn't be the only place you look.

Some fantastic opportunities are shared through LinkedIn, recruitment agencies, company websites and professional networks before many people even know they exist.

Tip 2 - Think about what you want, not just what you can do

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people only looking at what they're qualified to do.

Instead, ask yourself what you actually want from your next role.

Do you want:
✅ More flexibility?
✅ Better work-life balance?
✅ A chance to learn something new?
✅ More responsibility?
✅ A better company culture?

It's easy to focus on salary or job title, but those things alone don't make a role the right fit.

The happiest candidates I've worked with are usually the ones who know what's important to them before they start applying.

Last week I ran a poll asking what people needed the most help with in their job search.

The clear winner was finding the right role.

So over the next few posts, I thought I'd share some practical tips from a recruiter's perspective.

Tip 1 - Don't get too caught up on the job title.

Different companies often use completely different titles for very similar roles. If you're only searching for one specific title, you could be missing out on some fantastic opportunities.

Instead, focus on the job description.

Ask yourself:
✔️ Do I have most of the skills they're looking for?
✔️ Would I enjoy the work?
✔️ Does the company sound like somewhere I'd like to work?

I've spoken to so many candidates who almost didn't apply because they thought the title wasn't right. In reality, they were exactly what the employer was looking for.

Three candidates. Similar experience. One job offer!

Last week, one of my candidates landed the job they really wanted, and the feedback from the employer really stood out.

All three candidates had the right skills and experience. There honestly wasn't much between them on paper.

So what made the difference? Preparation.

The successful candidate had clearly taken the time to research the company, understand what they were looking for, and think about how their own experience fitted the role. Their answers felt genuine, well thought through, and showed they really wanted that job.

It's something I see all the time. So many people put all their energy into getting the interview, but don't spend enough time preparing for it.

A bit of research, thinking about your examples, and understanding what the company needs can make such a big difference.

I'm so pleased for this candidate because their hard work really paid off.

Have you ever looked at your CV and thought... "I've put everything I've done on there!"?

The truth is, employers don't just want to know what you've done, they want to know how well you've done it.

Instead of:
➡️ Managed a team

Try:
✅ Managed a team of 8, increasing productivity by 20% in 6 months.

It's those achievements and results that help your CV stand out and show the value you can bring.

Don't just list your responsibilities... show your impact!

If you're not sure whether your CV is really selling your strengths, it might be time to take a fresh look.

Thinking about a career switch but not sure where to start?

It’s something I’m hearing more and more lately and honestly, it makes total sense. A lot of people feel stuck because they think changing direction means starting from scratch but it doesn’t.

According to studies around 40% of UK professionals are considering a move this year, and over 80% of employers are placing more value on skills and mindset than ticking every box on a job spec.

That’s where this gets interesting because the way you communicate, how you solve problems and your ability to adapt and work with others are the things that travel with you, no matter what industry you’re in.

So even if your experience doesn’t look like a “perfect match” on paper, it doesn’t mean you’re not a strong fit. It just means you need to position it differently.

You don’t need to begin again, you just need to approach it with a bit more strategy.
