What a fantastic month it's been so far! 😊

I've been busy helping lots of people with CV reviews and interview preparation, which is always one of my favourite parts of the job. It's a great feeling seeing someone's confidence grow and hearing about interviews and job offers that follow.

As a result, my diary is filling up quickly and I only have a couple of coaching slots left for the rest of the month.

Let's talk about AI.

More and more candidates are using AI to help write CVs, cover letters and prepare for interviews.

And honestly? It can be a great tool.

But here's what I'm seeing:

The strongest applications still sound like a real person.

AI can help structure your experience, but it can't replace your achievements, personality or career story.

The candidates standing out are the ones using AI as a tool, not a replacement for themselves.

A candidate asked me recently "How do I get a job in a new industry when I don't have any experience?"

My answer was simple.

You probably have more relevant experience than you think.

Every week I speak to people who underestimate the transferable skills they've built through previous roles, career breaks, volunteering, parenting, or running a business.

The challenge isn't usually a lack of experience.

It's knowing how to tell your story.

I reviewed a CV this week from someone who hadn't had a single interview despite applying for dozens of roles.

The experience was great.

The problem? Their biggest achievements were buried on page 3.

In today's market, recruiters often spend seconds on an initial CV review. If your key skills and achievements aren't easy to spot, they can be missed.

Sometimes it's not about changing your experience. It's about changing how you present it.

Are you spending hours applying for jobs but still not getting interviews?

One of the biggest mistakes I see job seekers making right now is sending the same CV to 50 jobs and hoping something sticks. The reality is, it’s not about quantity it’s about quality.

Research shows recruiters often only spend just 6–8 seconds scanning a CV on first review. Employers the same. That doesn’t mean they don’t care, it means they’re reviewing hundreds of applications and quickly looking for relevance, clarity and alignment.

Having worked for nearly 18 years in recruitment, speaking to employers every single day, I can honestly say these points really do make a difference:

· A CV tailored to the role
· Clear, relevant achievements
· Keywords and skills that match the job spec
· An application that actually shows why YOU fit THAT role

In a competitive market, taking that extra time to tailor your application can genuinely be the difference between getting an interview or getting overlooked. If you’re applying for roles and not getting the response you hoped for, it may not be your experience holding you back, it's more than likely how you’re presenting it.

Do you have a LinkedIn profile? 🤔

It's something I ask candidates about all the time, and I'm always surprised by how many people either don't have one or haven't updated it in years.

While a CV is still important, LinkedIn gives you another opportunity to showcase who you are professionally. It allows employers and recruiters to see your experience, skills, recommendations, achievements, and even the content you're interested in or sharing.

Think of it as your professional shop window.

A strong LinkedIn profile can help you:
✅ Be found by recruiters and employers
✅ Highlight skills and achievements that might not fit on your CV
✅ Build credibility through recommendations
✅ Grow your professional network
✅ Learn about companies and opportunities

Where do you even start with your job search?

Chatting with a candidate last week, she said, “I know I want a new role, but I don’t actually know what I’m looking for.”

And honestly, I do think that’s more common than you think. We talked through together what parts of her current role she loved, what she definitely didn’t want to do again and what skills she had that could transfer elsewhere.

She’d been so focused on job titles, she hadn’t really thought about what she actually enjoyed. By the end of our chat, she wasn’t just searching for the same role anymore. Instead, she’d opened up a whole new direction she hadn’t even considered.

And that’s often the shift that changes everything:
• Your job search doesn’t have to be a straight line.
• Your experience is more transferable than you think.

If you’re at the start of your search, don’t rush to apply. Take a step back first and get clear on you.

Ever walked out of an interview thinking, “I didn’t quite show what I’m capable of there”?
