In our world, it’s not all about the numbers. We have spent years dedicating a discreet service to the industry and with our scale, reach and deep understanding of the market, we have helped our clients secure the talent they need year after year. It’s always been about quality!

So, faced with a set of impressive business statistics, it felt strange to view years of activity in number-form, rather than the series of success stories and relationships that our business has been built upon.

This 15 years’ talent experience seems like yesterday compared to the 35 years that I have spent within the media industry. This broader media experience (publishing and data) is proving invaluable where ‘media’, not just events, is increasingly key to successful appointments in roles at all levels now.

Our global reach in terms of both roles and candidates is constantly surprising our clients and, in truth, us too! I’m frequently amazed at the flexibility and versatility of our industry players who are frequently willing to relocate around the world. Moreover, I’m always impressed that despite understandable nervousness among clients and candidates that confidentialities are always maintained by clients and candidates alike.

Whilst I share the concerns of many in the industry at the issues we face at the entry/lower levels, the pool of genuine talent from Event Director upwards is in rude health. A testament to the leadership and development that the veterans of our industry have provided the next generations.

EVENTS FOR NAMUWONGO LIVES ON... MEET IAN
10 March 2023

A few years back now, the exhibition industry in the UK raised £1m over a four/five year period to improve the infrastructure of the slum community of Namuwongo in the foothills of Kampala, Uganda.

Improvements in the infrastructure were about improving the health and lives of those living in the community as well as creating jobs. Many industry players travelled to Namuwongo and some also supported children by funding them to go to school. On one of my trips to Namuwongo I met Stella, a single mother who was desperate to get her son to school. The alternative is an uneducated life on the street and all the dangers that that involves. My company, tfconnect, decided to sponsor Ian to go to school. It is a long-term but very rewarding commitment.

Ian is 13 years old and has just started Secondary School. This picture shows him at his new school in his new school uniform. What a smile!

Events for Namuwongo also lives on by supporting women in the community to launch entrepreneurial businesses. The aim is to help the women to support their families. We are also able to train 30 women at a time at a cost of just £3k (€3.4k) with very high levels of success. If you would like to consider supporting the programme let me know.

'A STAR CAST…OTHER THAN ME’!

At the AEV conference this week, I was pleased to bump into these guys who have in common that they were all placed in their current roles by tfconnect !

Having formed the AEV back in the day, it is great to see it in such strong form and I'm VERY grateful to Rachel Parker for inviting me along to see it in action.

THREE INTO TWO DOES GO!
29 November 2022

Earlier this year National Media’s creative supremo Mark Harvey called tfconnect MD Trevor Foley from Australia’s Gold Coast, asking if we could help them find both a Sales Director and a Marketing Director. It led to a video call that involved a very funny ‘sales pitch’ from CEO Brad Langton. Brad mentioned that he doesn't own a jumper, enjoys 300 days of sunshine, and is never more than 10 minutes from the beach.


The upshot was that, working with tfconnect’s industry partner Liz Sinclair of ESP Recruitment, we quickly found two talented individuals who were keen to swap the cold winter grey skies of the UK for the sunshine capital of Australia. However, with our industry knowledge, we additionally found a candidate that we thought could make an impact on their business with his specific industry knowledge, Mark and Brad agreed andhired all three, proving that three into two does indeed go!
