How many days of annual leave have you taken this year?

Almost all workers in the UK are entitled to 5.6 weeks of annual leave each year. For a full time employee this works out at 28 days leave a year including bank holidays (unless your employer opts to exclude them as part of your holiday allowance, in which case you will have even more days to use).

If your annual leave allocation runs from January to December, then now might be a good time to check how many days holiday you have left unallocated. Whilst you might be able to carry some of these days over into next year's allocation, you will usually need to use all of them by the end of March.

Those of you who have yet to allocate more than 50% of your annual might want to think about making sure you schedule in some time of over the next couple of months. Taking a week or two off work is incredibly beneficial not only for our physical health but also for our mental wellbeing too. No one is too busy to make time for annual leave, especially if you've made it to July without taking a full week off for yourself.

What changes will the new Labour Government make to the workplace?

In their election manifesto, the Labour Party pledged to change the Low Pay Commission’s remit to ensure that the minimum wage will in future reflect the need for pay to take into account the cost of living. They have also pledged to make flexible working the default from day one for all workers, except where it is not reasonably feasible. Again, this will be welcome news for many people, especially those that currently have to juggle either a part or full time job with looking after their children and covering school holidays.

In last week's King's Speech, the Government also announced that they will introduce a new Employment Rights Bill to ban the ""exploitative"" use of zero-hours contracts and introduce various new workers’ rights promised ahead of the election. A Race Equality Bill will also extend the right to make equal pay claims under the Equality Act to ethnic minority workers and disabled people, and bring in new pay reporting requirements for bigger firms.

A recent survey by insurance company AXA has found that 60% of adults would like to own their business by the time they reach 30.

63% of Gen Z (born after 1996) have already started their own side hustle or small business with many others already putting plans in place to become their own boss. One of the most common reasons given by Gen Z for starting their business was a need for greater job security in an ever-changing job market.

Does your dog come to work with you?

Dog ownership increased by about 24% during the pandemic, taking the total number of dogs living in the UK to around 13.5 million (at the last count).

As more of us have returned to the office, many employers and HR Managers are now being asked if employees can bring their pets into the workplace with them. In their recent National Dog Survey, the Dogs Trust found that 55,000 respondents would like to take their dogs to work with them if they were allowed.

There isn't actually any legal requirement in the UK for employees to be able to bring their dogs to work with them. Instead it is very much up to individual employers as to whether they think allowing dogs (or any pets) into the workplace is safe and appropriate for all employees.

Some of the positives of allowing pets into the workplace include: reduced stress; improved mental health and an increase in employee interactions. However, on the flip side employers need to consider whether any employees might be allergic to dogs as well as whether they could provide too much of a distraction.

An even more important factor to consider is whether your dog would actually enjoy being in a busy office all day. For example, is there somewhere quiet where they can go to rest and relax? Do you think they will get on with other office dogs? Is your office near any green spaces so that you can take them for a walk at lunchtime?

Would you take your dog to work with you if you could? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Workplace Trends: Quiet Vacationing

Over the last few years you might have heard a lot about the trend in the workplace for "quiet quitting", but recently a new one has started to emerge, particularly in America, called "quiet vacationing".

As the name might suggest, taking a quiet vacation involves taking a day (or half day) off work without using any of your holiday entitlement. A recent survey by the American market research company The Harris Poll, found that over three quarters of employees did not use their full holiday entitlement, with the average worker only taking 15 days off per year.

One of the main reasons given for not using holiday entitlement, particularly among young workers (61% of Millennials and 58% of Gen Z) is that they get nervous asking their employer if they can use their vacation allowance. This nervousness has led to many workers taking quiet vacationing days instead in order to schedule appointments or just take a break from their daily working schedules.
