“Why do you want this job?”

Apparently, one of the most ridiculous questions an employer can ask in an interview, judging by some of the comments I see online.

“Because I need money.”
“Because I've got bills to pay.”
“Because I need to eat.”

Well, yes. So does everybody else applying.

But I think people are completely misunderstanding what they're actually being asked.

There's a difference between needing a job and wanting a particular job.

And there's another side to this conversation that employers need to understand as well.

Because if you're asking somebody why they want to work for you, you should probably be able to explain why they'd want to in the first place.

Electrical Field Service Engineer – CNC Machine Tools.

Field-based, covering customer sites across the UK.

If you’re the person who gets called when a CNC machine stops, and everyone else has run out of ideas, this might be worth a conversation.
We’re looking for someone with hands-on CNC machine tool service experience and strong electrical/electronic fault-finding skills.

Experience with Heidenhain, Siemens SINUMERIK and/or Fanuc controls would be particularly relevant.

You’ll be working on installation, commissioning, servicing, breakdowns and diagnostics across CNC machinery, with technical support behind you when needed.
If you’re already working in CNC service and want to know more, drop me a message.

Likewise, if you know a good engineer who might be open to a move, send them my way.

Internal Sales Engineer – Compressed Air / Pneumatics

Thomas Lee Recruitment is working with a Shrewsbury-based manufacturer of specialist compressed air filtration products to recruit an Internal Sales Engineer.

This is an office-based technical sales role, focused mainly on developing customers by phone and email rather than traditional field sales. The initial focus will be the UK market, with the opportunity to also develop business within the US.

Everyone is really good at telling future employers what they have done.

Where they’ve worked. Their job title. Their responsibilities. The projects they’ve worked on.

Great. That gives someone your history.

But the hiring manager is trying to work out something else as well. What can you actually do?

More importantly, what can you do for them? That’s something a lot of CVs leave to the employer to work out for themselves.

I’m recruiting an Area Sales Manager – CNC Machine Tools covering the North Midlands / North West.

This is for someone who already understands manufacturing and can hold a proper technical conversation with engineers, production managers and business owners.
You’ll be representing established CNC machine tool brands, developing existing relationships and finding new opportunities across the territory.

Ideally, you’ll come from:
- CNC machine tools
- Cutting tools
- Manufacturing technology
- Technical engineering sales

You don’t need to live dead centre of the territory either. If you’re close enough to cover it properly, we can have the conversation.
If you’re already selling into UK manufacturing and fancy hearing what it’s about, drop me a message.
