The Voice Studio of Maggi Ballantyne

The Voice Studio of Maggi Ballantyne Professional singer and vocal expert with over 40 years of live worldwide performance experience at a 6-star level. Maggi now has a buoyant business.

I use my wealth of experience to coach all types of singers, from absolute beginners to professionals, and of all age groups and genres. The Voice Studio was born out of 40 years of professional working experience. Maggi can hardly remember a week when she did not stand on a stage. Now she passes her knowledge and experience on to the many students who have gone through her hands in the last 22 ye

ars. Maggi was initially employed as a Lecturer by Middlesbrough College and Vocal Coach for both the Music and Performing Arts Departments teaching BTech and HND. She also taught Voice for Stage Coach Hartlepool and Darlington branches. At this time she began teaching one to one, mostly professional singers, vocal technique and sorting out damaged voices. North East agents sent new young acts to prepare for their professional career being taught singing, performance, audience management, communication skills and much more. She also acted as a consultant to many acts needing advice how to enter and to work the business and sustain a career as well as deal with the many pitfalls along the way. She has a Studio at Washington Arts Centre, Fatfield. She now teaches all age groups from the age of 7 upwards. Maggi’s oldest student is 77. Every single student gets the same opportunity. Young and old alike without exception become better singers and many have gone on to be professional singers themselves. Many young people who have started out with no singing ability at all fall into this category, and others have enjoyed their moment through the many student shows set up to develop the skills needed for stage and to propel them into working harder to achieve their dream or their goal. Many of the students prepare for auditions and achieve scholarships to Performing Arts Schools throughout the country, or university/college places to pursue their careers on stage. Some other long term students have entered into teaching themselves making Maggi The Teacher’s Teacher. Maggi is also employed by Newcastle University to coach voice for popular music degree students to graduate level. Vocal technique is about learning the mechanisms to have a strong supported safe voice. You will be taught good breathing. The correct use of the many muscles involved in the singing process. The aim is to improve range, tone, resonance, pitch, power, etc. In addition musicality, dynamics, phrasing, and getting the ‘atmosphere’ right. There are many methods you will learn
that aim to point you towards better singing with good technique. Your performance will improve and your ability to engage with your audience verbally and non verbally with good communication skills. Really the teaching never ends and some students have stayed upwards of ten years and still come back for top ups to up their game. It’s a fabulous journey. All it takes is patience, focus and determination. When Covid hit, the business of teaching singing moved on line. This turned out to be very successful and everyone continued to improve. Vocal Coaching became available to a wider audience. Now with students in London, Scotland, Yorkshire and Northumberland - on line teaching has stayed in place. Now students have a choice. On line or face to face at The Studio. Spoiled for choice and you can mix it up too. So that’s what The Voice Studio is about. Maggi Ballantyne brings her particular teaching style. It never fails to build your confidence whatever age and whatever standard. Everyone is welcome.

TOUCHING BASE
PLEASE SHARE
The world of singing is still revolving. Students who trained with me are out there gigging this weekend. At Festivals and Holiday Camps, at venues throughout Newcastle and Sunderland in fact the length and breadth of the North East circuit - clubs, pubs, theatres. You name it they’re doing it. All kinds of styles that serve every market. There’s quite a busy market out there. Others are in touring companies nationally and internationally and others doing a bit of karaoke or in choirs or making albums at home or in the studio. Others are teaching now. Some have since given it up and have kids of their own who are going to their own classes. Who said the business is over. I can assure you that it is not.
And it’s as colourful as ever. If it’s your dream it can be done ###

AMBAR AT LINDISFARNE
For the second year running Ambar Dhesi appeared at The Lindisfarne Festival. Last year she led a group of young original artists. This year she took the stage for a longer spot. It was good to hear from her that her set went down really well. Ambar has continued to develop her events business introducing more and more of her original songs at her events as well as giving young artists a platform. Long may she continue. She’s been relentless in all the years I’ve known her to take her music further. Good to see her getting recognition.

THEY’RE NOT JUST PHOTOS!
PLEASE SHARE
Every photo tells a story. My story started age 15 when I walked into a folk club with my guitar and asked them to let me sing. Aged 15. And I never stopped. Aged 16 I was offered an audition with a local band leader in my hometown of Greenock and got the job. Age 19 I was touring the length and breadth of the UK with a Cabaret Show Band. Vocal harmony. Aged 25 - I was touring Europe with an all round light rock band. Aged 36 I was sailing the world as a headliner on 5/6 star cruise ships and in between doing the bread and butter work here in the UK in between flying here and there for one off gigs. Corporate work. Theatre work. Holiday camps. And so much more. I’ve sung with every kind of band in every kind of venue at a time when there was a lot of work. And I’ve been passing on what I know for the last 27 years. Making you safer, better singers to get you through your gigs. It’s been a musical journey and pleased to say it still is - watching all the students I prepared for a life in this great industry of ours going on to live the dream they started with to become a professional singer. And believe me they’re doing it. I might start posting some of the testimonials just because it reminds me of my relevance. I’m so proud of them all x

BIRTHDAY BOY
ALAN - 70 TODAY
PLEASE SHARE
Yes he made it. The man with 9 lives is 70 today. And I was lucky enough to become his wife. He’s a wonderful husband. We’ve been through it side by side after he lost his business, and a life and death time when he took a year out of our lives to be treated for blood cancer. Not to mention falling out of the loft on his back just a year and a half ago. In between we’ve lived. He’s supported my business from the side lines lighting your shows, hu***ng the gear, running after students, entertaining parents and never complains. He gave his best years to his own work at DFS. Hoping they think of the legend now and then. Now he’s 70 and yes off out AGAIN to meet our great friends. Send him your best birthday wishes ###

MATCH FIT
PLEASE SHARE
This term doesn’t just refer to football and other sports. It’s something we singers know all about if we take a break from professional work and stop singing altogether. Not that I did much of that. I was genuinely practicing every day if I wasn’t actually out there doing it. But when I started coaching I finally phased myself away from the stage and launched myself into teaching other people. When I did return to the stage on occasion I really felt the difference. How ever much you practice it’s not the same as tramping the boards night after night. Although I was warming up repeatedly and demonstrating and yes some recording and practicing for myself, it was quite another matter giving it full delivery to a full audience. It’s physical. We need to support and get the right muscles back up to speed. So my point is singers. Make sure you still do what it takes to keep your voice in top condition even if you’re having a break from performing. You’ll thank me for reminding you ###
