Trish is our Founder and Director and after 31 years in recruitment, she’s still as passionate about people as ever.
We sat down with Trish to learn more about her journey, what drives her, and why great recruitment really matters.
❔ How long have you worked in the recruitment industry?
💭 31 years!
❔ What inspired you to start your own recruitment agency?
💭 I previously worked for an agency that treated both candidates and staff terribly. There was bullying, poor communication, and very little respect for people.
I loved recruitment, but I knew it could and should be done differently. Recruitment is a people industry. Candidates aren’t purely CVs, and clients aren’t just vacancies. When people are treated with honesty, respect, and care, amazing things can happen.
Over the years, we’ve helped candidates find careers that genuinely changed their lives, and we’ve supported businesses in finding talent that transformed their teams. That’s what great recruitment should be about.
❔ What do you enjoy most about the recruitment industry?
💭 The variety - no two days are ever the same!
I also love the relationships you build. Whether it’s helping someone secure a role they never thought they’d get, or supporting a client through a period of growth, you become part of their journey.
To me, nothing is ever an issue if there’s open, honest communication. Challenges happen, but when everyone works together, solutions can always be found.
❔ What’s one top tip you’d give to someone wanting to succeed in recruitment?
💭 Can I have four?…
1️⃣ Plan your day and know what success looks like. Recruitment moves quickly and priorities change, but starting with a clear goal keeps you focused.
2️⃣ Focus on the right activities with the right people. Set goals and stay committed until you achieve them.
3️⃣ Keep stakeholders updated consistently. Communication is everything in recruitment — even “no news” is still an update.
4️⃣ Build resilience. Recruitment is a rollercoaster, and you have to learn how to manage the highs and lows. Care deeply about what you do, but also recognise that if you’ve genuinely given 100%, that’s all anyone can ask.
❔ What’s the one thing on your desk you couldn’t be without?
💭 My desktop computer! I’m definitely old school, I just work far better from a desktop than a laptop.
❔ We heard you’re looking for new talent to join Team First Base! How can people apply?
💭 Contact myself or Karl Moon, we’re looking for people with real drive to do what they say they’ll do, sweat the small things that make all of the difference, keep in contact with stakeholders and drive growth.
