Congrats to all at Stratford Town Trust on 25 brilliant years!

Stratford Town Trust has been a consistent and much valued funder for over 20 years. In fact, it funded one of our earliest paid employees when Lifespace was a tiny Stratford charity just beginning our journey. With their support, we’ve grown from those early days to support more than 11,400 young people, delivering over 49,000 hours of mentoring and helped thousands more through group work.

We’re still rooted in Stratford, responding to the needs of local young people, but our reputation and reach continue to grow. We’re proud to have grown alongside Stratford Town Trust and grateful for the role they have played in helping generations of young people feel heard, build resilience and thrive.

And, remarkably Kirsty, that same member of staff funded by STT all those years ago, recently rejoined Lifespace after more than a decade away – a reminder of the lasting connections that have shaped both organisations!

We also got a small mention in this BBC article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ck8d3vnn4pndo

πŸ’™ 1 in 4 Year 8 students in England are likely to have a mental health condition. That's 25% of young people aged 12-13 navigating significant challenges during a crucial stage of development. οΏΌ

New findings from Anna Freud's Growing Up in the 2020s study, which is following nearly 8,000 young people across England, also highlight growing inequalities in mental health and wellbeing. Young people eligible for free school meals were also almost twice as likely to experience mental health difficulties (36% vs 20%).

While the majority of young people reported positive relationships, good life satisfaction and high levels of resilience, these findings remind us that prevention, early support and equitable access to mental health services have never been more important. οΏΌ

At Lifespace, we're committed to creating safe, supportive spaces where children and young people can access the help they need, when they need it. If you or a young person you know needs extra support, get in touch via [email protected], or 01789297400.

Last Friday, members of the Lifespace team took part in some exciting training with Sarah Favier on effective supervision in schools.

Drawing on models such as the 7-Eyed Model of Supervision, we explored different perspectives within supervision, including safeguarding concerns, professional relationships, reflective practice, and the wider context in which schools operate.

We are excited to continue building on our existing knowledge and skills, strengthening our capacity to provide high-quality external supervision for pastoral and safeguarding staff across schools in Warwickshire.

Flying Scotsman Challenge Update πŸ’™πŸƒ

1️⃣ Pretzl 10k - James & Guide Runner Jo Broughton:

James and Jo took on the Pretzl 10k, and it proved a real challenge for them both. With no advantages of light or shade, James had to run on complete trust, and Jo’s guiding was pushed to its limits, especially knowing James had a big race ahead on Sunday. A stumble could have been catastrophic, but together they handled it with focus, teamwork and a lot of grit.

2️⃣ AJ Bell Great Scottish Run - James & Guide Runner Joe Taylor:

The Great Scottish Run is still James’ favourite Great Run event- tough, wet, and brilliant fun. James and Joe even made the live feed, plus a Heart Radio shout‑out for Lifespace- a huge win for their work supporting young people in Warwickshire! They also began the run with Mark who was the first disabled participant to have an official wheelchair start line introduced back in 2006.

Being home in Scotland with family and his guide team meant the world, and the support from Warwickshire reminded him exactly where his heart belongs now.

➑️ Next up: Leicester Half this Sunday.

"No snowflake generation."

Professor Peter Fonagy recently challenged the idea that young people today are less resilient. (link in comments)

At Lifespace, we agree. πŸ’™
What we see every day is a generation facing enormous pressures: anxiety, exam stress, loneliness, family challenges, friendship difficulties, school attendance concerns and uncertainty about the future.

Childhood and adolescence have become harder, not easier.
Our response is to create safe spaces where young people can talk, be heard and build the tools they need to cope.

Last year we delivered over 5,700 mentoring sessions to 568 young people. We also participated in 178 group activities to a further 611 young people. And it makes a difference.

⭐ 84% of young people in a mid-year outcomes snapshot reported improved wellbeing.

More importantly, this is what young people told us:
πŸ’¬"Having a quiet non-judgemental place to speak."
πŸ’¬"Being able to say anything freely."
πŸ’¬"I could speak openly in a safe space."
πŸ’¬"I felt welcome and listened to and was understood through every session."
πŸ’¬"It helped me so much and I'm extremely grateful for all of the support.

We don't see weakness. We see young people facing real challenges with courage, honesty and resilience.

The challenge isn't whether they're resilient enough. It's whether we're providing the support they deserve. πŸ’™

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ The Flying Scotsman Challenge continues with two special upcoming races.

πŸ“ 30th September - Pretzl 10K, Coombe Abbey:

This will be James and Jo Broughton's second run together with Big Bear Events. After battling the heat in their last race, this time they'll be facing the challenge of running in darkness. With no shadows to help with navigation, James will be relying entirely on Jo's voice and guidance to safely tackle the course together.

🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 4th October - AJ Bell Great Scottish Run, Glasgow:

James will be taking on his third Great Scottish Run, a race that holds a special place in his heart. This year he'll be guided by Joe Taylor, his first English guide at this event, making the experience even more meaningful.

With strong connections to Lifespace shared by both runner and guide, they're proud to be running in support of a cause that means so much to them.

If you'd like to support the Flying Scotsman’s Lifespace fundraising journey, please consider visiting the GoFundMe page. Every contribution, no matter the size, is greatly appreciated. πŸ’™
