Statutory Sick Pay changed in April.

From 6 April 2026, SSP is payable from the first full day of sickness absence. The lower earnings limit has also been removed, which means more employees may now qualify.

For small businesses, this means your absence process needs to be up to date.

Check your payroll system.
Update your sickness absence policy.
Remove any old wording about waiting days or minimum earnings limits.
Hold return-to-work conversations after every absence.
Record absence consistently.
Make sure managers know how to deal with absence patterns early.

This is not about making absence management complicated.

It is about making sure your business is paying correctly, recording properly and dealing with issues before they become costly.

Go HR can help you review your sickness absence process and get the basics right.

A business owner told me recently they had never thought about HR until an employee raised a tribunal claim.

By then it was too late to build the foundations. We could only manage the damage.

HR is not something you need when things are fine. It is what protects you when they are not.

Go HR works with small business owners to put the right foundations in place before the crisis hits, and to support them through it when it does.

Is your business protected? Find out at ww.gohr.co.uk

Big changes are taking place through the Employment Rights Act.

The problem for many small businesses is not hearing about them.

It is knowing what they actually mean for the business.

Some changes are already in force.

More are expected later in 2026.

And further reforms are expected in 2027.

These changes affect real day to day issues like:
sick pay
family leave
probation
performance management
dismissals
contract changes
holiday records
workplace policies

One of the biggest changes to prepare for is the expected move to 6 month unfair dismissal rights from January 2027.

That means onboarding, probation and performance management need to be much stronger.

We have mapped the key milestones out in this carousel so you can see what has changed, what is coming next and where to focus.

If you want help working out what action your business needs to take, Go HR is here to help.

Supporting local means a lot, being part of our local community means a lot, being a proud member of the sponsors means a lot.

I believe in giving back and enabling local events to take part is a great way that we can be involved.

Thank you to Nicky Anstey for such lovely feedback.

Nicky used our Go Safe range of products and support and described Louise and the Go HR team as helpful, authentic and practical.

Her words summed it up perfectly:
“𝗡𝗼 𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗳𝗳, 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱, 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲.”

That is exactly what Go Safe is about.

Helping small business owners get the HR basics right with contracts, policies, procedures and practical support that fits their business.

Need HR support but not sure which option is right for your business?

There are a few routes.

You could train someone in the team to handle HR alongside their main job.
That can work for very small businesses, but it can also overload them and lead to things being missed.

You could hire an in-house HR manager.
That gives you dedicated support, but the salary and on-costs do not always make sense for smaller businesses.

You could use a national HR provider.
This may help with basic queries, but the advice can feel generic, and you may speak to someone different each time.

Or you could work with an independent HR consultant.
That gives you tailored, consistent support from someone who gets to know your business, without adding another salary to payroll.

The right support depends on your size, budget and what is actually happening in your business.

Go HR can help you work out what makes sense.
