Fewer than half of UK job ads now show a salary.

Adzuna's tracking has it falling faster than at any point in recent years, down from around two-thirds a decade ago. All while adverts that do show the money attract roughly 27% more applications, going by Reed.

We get why it happens. The fear is usually about keeping flexibility, or not tipping off competitors, or avoiding awkward conversations with the team.

But the bit that gets lost is a strong candidate seeing no salary doesn't think "how discreet." They think "not worth my afternoon," and they move on to the advert that tells them what it pays.

If the real reason for leaving it off is that you're not certain what the role should pay, that's a fair concern, and a fixable one.

Temp recruitment gets treated as the thing you do when someone's gone off sick or a role has suddenly emptied. Useful in a crisis, but not part of the plan.

That's one use for it. It isn't the only one, and for a lot of SMEs it isn't the most valuable one either.

Temporary hires work well when you need capacity for a defined piece of work, like a system implementation, a year-end push, or a maternity cover where the permanent role is already filled.

They work well when you're scaling a team and want to test demand before committing to another permanent headcount, or when you've got a role you're not quite sure about yet, and a three-month temp gives you the chance to see the shape of it before writing a final job spec.

They also work well when someone senior is on notice and you need continuity in the background while you run the permanent search properly, rather than rushing it.

Used deliberately, temp recruitment gives you flexibility that permanent hiring can't, as well as capacity when you need it, without the long-term commitment when you don't.

If you've got something on the horizon where the shape of the role isn't settled yet, or the workload is a lot but the headcount case isn't, it's worth a conversation before you default to a permanent brief.
