As there is more and more disruption in businesses the is a need for experienced staff from all industries. The current young and dynamic workforce’s don’t have the depth of experience in order to implement change effectively. Recent surveys show that more and more companies are turning to consultants to help navigate the changes they need.

If you have been made redundant or thrown on the ‘junk pile’ by your employer then stay positive as there are many businesses looking for industry specific experience. You might need to re-invent your thinking about standard job titles and roles.

Have you help a company you have worked in go through a business change and if so what were the results?.... now you have something tangible to add to your CV under experiences. Use the STAR technique to show what the problem or challenge was, actions that were taken and the result that was achieved.

If you have never worked in IT or project roles before don’t be afraid to apply as the tech teams will translate your ideas and the project manager will show you what is expected.

There are great opportunities out there, you just need to keep believing and if you need help RTWS are here to help.

Does Brexit really mean job loses ? Have you been told you are at risk as a result of Brexit down turn in business?

There could definitely be some truth in companies deciding to consolidate their resource plan due to possible Brexit outcomes, however it’s quite likely that they are using the uncertainty as a reason to make changes and their already planned reductions in the workforce.

If you are unfortunate enough to be one of those ‘statistics’ don’t panic!
Ask yourself is Brexit going to impact the chance of you finding suitable work?
Will employers in every business be cutting back?
Has my value and skill set suddenly become obsolete?

In short the answer is NO you are just as valuable as you were and this is a great opportunity to do something different in your career.

Stay focused on your role till the very last day and use the time of consultation you think about all the business that you interact with. What you like about them and who you know there. Make a note (not steal data) of companies and personnel who you have a relationship with and think about how you could leverage the information once you have left the business. Linked in is a great way to do this.

Ask your employers for help with your CV or a copy of your job description, which will help you write a CV. Note down all the different departments you deal with in your current role and what you have done to improve the relationship. Increased efficiency or improved communication as example.

Next steps:
Staying motivated and leaving motivated to find a new role is the best strategy, albeit emotionally you may not feel that it’s an option.
Write your CV, get it viewed by a professional service.
Dust off the possible interview outfit, treat yourself to a new shirt or blouse to help you feel good.
Network as much as you can with colleagues, associates and anyone who is in the field of your interest.
Keep talking to your partner or close friends to ‘ share’ what you are going through.

Remember there is no shame in being redundant or laid off, it’s just an opportunity to do something different and better suited to your skills.

Brexit won’t hold you back, only you can hold yourself back!

A challenge was brought to me recently by a retail manager approaching 60. The employers are constantly cutting staff hours and therefore his role is becoming more about shelf filling than management, including a lot of lifting.

As our workforce ages how do we expect them to keep them, when clearly they will look to leave the company to find a less physical role...taking their loyalty and knowledge with them?

We are trying to show employees that they should plan an exit strategy but also to make sure they speak to the employers to see what other options exist.

Sitting down and documenting all the roles and responsibilities you have covered in your career within your current employer. Once this is complete think about who you worked with and the relationship with them, supervisor, team lead or resource coordinator. What did the roles achieve ? Were there improvements, goals met?

Completing this expertise whilst still in employment allows the opportunity to ask colleagues whom you worked with and collate a summary. The summary can be condensed into your CV or to form the basis of your conversation with your current employer...

It’s never too late to try something new!
