Good people are usually the last to complain. 😅😅😅

Which is one of the reasons businesses miss the warning signs of a bad hire.

You'd think if someone wasn't pulling their weight or wasn't right for the culture, somebody would say something...
..but most people don't want the drama or to feel responsible for costing someone their job. 😢 So they keep their head down and get on with it... until one day they leave.

And by the time management realises there's an issue, they've lost the wrong person. 🤦‍♂️

Maybe we're biased as recruiters... 😅😅😅 But that's exactly why we've spent years telling clients that a CV won't show them how their new hire is going to fit in their team.

Skills matter...experience matters....but the impact one person can have on a team matters too... and that's the bit a piece of paper will never tell you. 🙌🏽

One of the easiest ways to stand out in business... is to remember things. 😅

I had a meeting recently and congratulated someone on passing an exam they'd posted about on LinkedIn. They looked at me like I'd hacked their phone. 😂

People spend a lot of time talking about relationship building as if it's some mysterious skill...

Most of the time it's just paying attention. Remembering someone has kids... when they moved jobs... something they were worried about three months ago and asking how it turned out.

This came up in a conversation with Francesca Starkey recently and I think she's spot on.

We all need to be good at our jobs. That's a given. But people also like doing business with people they like, and that's often someone who makes an effort to remember. 🙌🏽

A reminder for employers… 🤔

Just because someone is ambitious doesn't mean they're willing to be miserable. 😅

One thing I've noticed speaking to a lot of the younger people coming into the industry is that they want the same things we all did...
..progress, responsibility, to achieve things and build a successful career. 🙌🏽

But they also want to enjoy what they're doing.

As Jack Cope said on the podcast recently... the man who loves walking will go further than the man who loves the destination

So... are you showing your team how to walk? Or just pointing them at a destination? 🤔

Turns out being a great salesperson...
..doesn’t automatically make you a great sales leader.

This week’s NRG Insights episode is with Adam Tauber, Head of Sales at Phoenix205 Money, talking about the difference between the two and how to lead people in a relationship-led industry.

Adam’s career has taken him through lending, broking and leadership roles across specialist finance, giving him experience from multiple sides of the market.

In the episode, we cover:

🟣 The change from selling to leading
🟣 What Adam first learnt about sales (and still uses)
🟣 How to build high-performing sales teams
🟣 Why relationships still drive growth in finance
🟣 And how Phoenix205 Money is evolving its broker proposition

If you work in sales, lending, broking or leadership within financial services, there’s a lot in this one.

One of the hardest things when you’re younger in this industry is feeling like you’re the only one going through it. 😅

Everyone seems 10 years older and already knows each other…
..while you’re just trying to work out where you’re supposed to stand without looking awkward. 🍻😂

That’s why networking with people who are the same stage as you matters so much.

It was really interesting hearing Calypso Cox talk about how much Young People In Bridging (YPIB) has changed that for her.

Fair play to Caelan Gokani for creating something that’s brought a lot of younger people together who might not have crossed paths otherwise. 🙌🏽

And let’s be honest…
..probably nicer for them than listening to us old boys talk nonsense in the pub. 😅🍻

One thing I’ve realised as I’ve got older… 👴🏼👴🏼👴🏼

Most people actually want you to succeed. 😅

As Razvana Horton said on the pod recently, young people in our industry spend so much time worrying about competition, what people think, whether they're being judged…
..until someone says something nice and they realise they’ve been overthinking it.

I remember Guy Harrington saying to me years ago “we want you to succeed because we like you”… and it genuinely caught me off guard. 🤔

This industry needs more of that mindset. Positive people backing each other.

So if there's someone you want to see do well, tell them! 🙌🏽 🙌🏽 🙌🏽

Some people in this industry still mistake confidence for arrogance…

…especially when you’re younger. 😅

But if someone’s good at their job and they’ve got personality and confidence… isn’t that a massive advantage? Not just for them and their business… but for the industry as a whole?

Part of the reason I’ve been filming the Rising Stars series is to showcase some of the talent we’ve got coming through in FS, and hopefully encourage more people into the industry too.

…I might be one of the few people in finance getting younger looking with age 😉 but we do need more talent coming through, and I think we should do a better job of welcoming it when it arrives.

At the end of the day, people work with people they actually enjoy speaking to. Personality matters… probably more than we admit sometimes. 🙌🏽

Really enjoyed this conversation with Francesca Starkey recently.

If you were watching Channel 5 on Sunday evening, you might’ve seen Razvana Horton on Rich Wedding Poor Wedding…

That was just her warm-up...
..for NRG Insights. 💪 😁

Razvana joins me for the latest Rising Stars 2026 episode, talking through her move from property to finance and how she’s built her career as a BDM at Hampshire Trust Bank.

In the episode, we cover:

🟣 Moving from property into financial services
🟣 Adapting when the market shifts
🟣 The transition into lending
🟣 Why relationships matter more than people think
🟣 What helps you build confidence early on

If you’re looking to get into finance, or build momentum early in your career, listen now...

It’s easier to say “just take the risk”…
..when you’re young and you haven’t got kids... a mortgage, bills and everything else that comes with it. 😅

But if there’s something you actually want… a different role, more responsibility, a bigger opportunity… then at some point you’ve got to decide whether you’re going to go for it or not.

If you’re prepared to work hard and take a bit of pain for a few months to get there, it can be worth it.

Because in reality, the downside usually isn’t as bad as you think.

Most of the time, the worst case is you end up looking for another job.

Not ideal… but not the end of the world either.

That came up in a conversation with Jack Cope recently.
