"More ruthlessly lethal." That's the goal for the British Army's new 'Find and Strike' squadrons. "We are also flying drones under-armour and on the move to integrate the system's capability into an armoured battle group so we can operate at a tempo unmatched by our enemies."
It sounds like a fantastic step for UK ground forces. Hopefully, we can continue to roll out these types of initiatives across the entire Army fast enough to keep up with the pace of modern conflict.
Given the current investment plans and technology demands within the UK defence sector, I see workforce capability and availability becoming a limiting factor for programme delivery.
How should companies manage their strategic talent initiatives to stay ahead?

Exercise Senne Hussar saw soldiers trial the launch of surveillance and strike drones from moving armoured vehicles, with live feeds shared across all troops in real time without crews needing to dismount.

Mechanical Systems Engineer, £40,000 - £60,000/annum + benefits - .

The position will involve systems design engineering and would suit mechanical design engineers that can work at systems level (top of the V cycle) rather than detailed design. (i.e. this is not a CAD or CAE role) It would suit engineers that have worked on engine systems (ICEs), gearboxes or very similar. Automotive, marine or aerospace engine experience would be great.

The UK defence sector is entering a significant period of expansion and structural change.

At DPRTE 2026 in Farnborough, Luke Pollard MP outlined a procurement reform agenda aimed at strengthening warfighting readiness while positioning defence as a driver of national economic growth. With increased spending, a stronger focus on the UK industrial base, and a target to increase direct spending with SMEs by 50% by 2028, the direction of travel is clear: more capability, more innovation, and a broader supplier ecosystem.

Initiatives such as the new Defence Office for Small Business Growth and the AWS UK SME Vanguard programme also signal a serious effort to open the defence supply chain to smaller and more agile technology companies.

From a talent and workforce strategy perspective, this raises some interesting questions for the sector.

If we are about to see:
- a significant expansion in SME participation
- a 10-year pipeline of defence capability investment
- accelerated adoption of emerging technologies

…then the real question may not just be how we procure capability, but how we build the workforce needed to deliver it.

Mechanical Systems Engineer, £40,000 - £60,000/annum + benefits - .

The positions will involve systems design engineering and would suit engineers with experience working at the top end of the V-cycle rather than detailed design. (i.e. this is not a CAD). You will be working on next generation ICE or H2ICE systems). Experience in base engine design would be great. However, this customer could consider those from other complex mechanical systems backgrounds (aeroengines, gearboxes, etc).

Serco has secured a seven-year contract to support the British Army's fleet of 512 marine vessels, starting in April 2026.

Serco will handle maintenance, repairs, spares, trials, and more for a range of vessels, including over 140 Mexeflotes and 18 Combat Support Boats. This contract highlights Serco's vital role in defence engineering and asset management, ensuring operational readiness for the British Army.

Congratulations to Serco for this achievement, demonstrating their expertise and capabilities in the defence sector. This development is crucial for maintaining effective troop and equipment transport in diverse conditions.

Beyond a solid delivery strategy, the success of such initiatives hinges on the people involved. Ensuring talent is properly aligned with programme goals is non-negotiable.

Serco, the international provider of critical government services, has been awarded a seven-year contract to provide in-service support for the British Army’s fleet of 512 marine vessels.

Is the UK making it harder to attract global tech talent?

This article says the UK tech sector is now worth $1.2T and employs ~1.7M people. Much of that growth has been powered by international talent.
But proposed changes to settlement rules could mean:

- Longer routes to permanent residency (potentially much longer for some roles)
- High visa costs (a Skilled Worker visa can exceed £6k)
- Uncertainty for dependants and families

At a time when global competition for engineers and technologists is intensifying, these signals matter.

From my perspective working with engineering and tech companies, international hiring is a key part of the talent strategy for many businesses.

But I'm curious what leaders are seeing on the ground:

CTOs / Heads of Engineering / Founders / HR leaders —
- How hard is it to hire global tech talent today?
- Are visa costs or sponsorship processes a barrier?
- And how easy is it to retain employees who depend on visas?

Today marks 90 years since the Spitfire's maiden flight at Southampton. Captain Summers' iconic flight was a significant moment in British history as the Spitfire proved to be a remarkable and very successful aircraft indeed. What a marvellous piece of aerospace history - I'll be listening out for the Spitfire flypast.

A tribute flypast and new plaques are planned for the Supermarine Spitfire's anniversary.
