You might only have five, ten or twenty employees, but that does not mean your people challenges are any less complicated.

Contracts, sickness absence, performance concerns, flexible working requests, grievances, disciplinaries and ever changing employment law can quickly become difficult to manage alongside running a business.

Having HR support does not mean you need a full time HR department. It means having someone you can turn to when you are unsure, before a small issue becomes a much bigger one.

At Tellwright Consulting, we work alongside small and growing businesses, providing practical HR advice when they need it.

Good HR is not just about fixing problems. It is about putting the right foundations in place to prevent them.

Whether it is a restructure, new leadership, changes to working patterns, new systems or simply a different way of doing things, workplace change can create uncertainty for employees.

Clear communication is key. Employees need to understand what is changing, why it is happening, how it could affect them and, importantly, have the opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns.

For employers, managing change properly can help maintain trust, reduce disruption and ensure the correct HR processes are followed.

One manager handles an issue one way, while another takes a completely different approach. Over time, that inconsistency can become a much bigger problem.

When HR processes are not followed consistently, employees can feel they are being treated unfairly, managers can become unsure about what action to take, and businesses can expose themselves to unnecessary risk.

From absence and performance management to grievances, disciplinaries and flexible working requests, having clear processes helps everyone understand what is expected.

Consistency does not mean every situation should be treated exactly the same. It means having a fair, structured approach while considering the individual circumstances.

If your HR processes have evolved over time and could benefit from a review, Tellwright Consulting can help you get the right foundations in place.

They are two HR processes that are often confused, but they deal with very different situations.

A grievance is usually raised by an employee when they have a concern, complaint or problem at work. This could relate to another employee, their working conditions, treatment by management or something they feel has not been handled fairly.

A disciplinary is initiated by the employer when there are concerns about an employee’s conduct or, depending on the organisation’s procedure, performance at work.

Both need to be handled fairly, consistently and in line with the correct process. Getting it wrong can quickly turn a manageable workplace issue into something much more complicated.

If you are dealing with a grievance or disciplinary and are unsure of the next step, Tellwright Consulting can support you through the process.
