As the days get longer and the flowers start to bloom, it is important that we shift ourselves out of the winter blues. Everyone has their own preference but here at Maru we agree that the best way to recharge is to go out for a nice long walk or if you can, take a long weekend off and discover some local nature spots.

But if you're stuck for a location or a route, here are a couple of apps we use which give us ideas about where to go:

- GoJauntly https://bit.ly/3nTa16C - perfect for your local walks, with photo guides to make sure you don’t get lost!

- AllTrails https://bit.ly/3Go2QtP - It’s our go-to for those bigger hikes. You can research and download hikes even offline to make sure you don’t get steered off your track.

- The National Trust App https://bit.ly/3ZOhp0m - You’ll be able to search more than 500 spaces in the UK with their location, directions, facilities and opening times whilst also browsing through their events.

Why not take advantage of the long weekend and get out and about? (If the weather behaves)

An often forgotten but hugely important part of the interview process?

FEEDBACK!

Unfortunately, some companies and recruiters are not great at providing feedback. But when you DO get feedback, whether it is positive or negative it is so important to listen and learn from it.

Sit back, take notes, think about what they are saying, and try not to take anything too personally. If a hiring manager or a recruiter is giving you constructive feedback after an interview, bear in mind it is because they are wanting to ensure that the next time you are in an interview situation, you can address these concerns and ultimately get the job!

And to any employers or recruiters out there reading this – PLEASE provide feedback after interviews whether candidate has been successful or not.

5 tips to ace your next job interview.

Have you ever walked out of a job interview knowing you could have done more? Follow these tips to take your interview skills to the next level.

1 - Ask questions at the end of the interview, this will give the interviewer the opportunity to voice any reasons they might have for not offering you the job. Once they have done this, you now can propose a counter argument, hopefully alleviating any of these concerns. a great question for this is "Do you have any concerns about taking me forward to the next stage?"

2 - Do your research on the company. If you are struggling for time to prepare for an interview, the one piece of research you need to prioritise is finding out about the company. Make sure you understand what the company does and look at any latest announcements. If you are asked the question ‘why do you want to work here?’, or ‘what do you know about us?’ you want to be confident in your answer.

3 - If you are not sure of the question, do not be afraid to clarify. Interviews are stressful situations. Anyone can be forgiven for asking for clarification. And if you are still not sure, ask if you can come back to that question.

4 - Be respectful. Always talk about past colleagues and companies with respect. However, negative an experience has been, you always want to treat people with respect and focus on the positives. What did you learn from the experience?

5 - It is not over until it is over. If you are at the start of an hour’s interview, and you feel like you have made a mistake in the first 5 minutes, try not to panic. Don’t worry about what you have said, focus on the remainder of the interview. Smile. You can still walk away having made a great impression.

With the first working week of January already on its way out the door, some of you may be struggling a little with setting or managing your New Years Resolutions or ambitions for 2023.

That's why we are re-sharing this handy guide which uses the S.M.A.R.T method to help you set and stick to new habits over the coming year.

Specific - Don’t be vague with want you want to do!
If you wan to run more in 2022, why not sign up for an event? Having a specific date to run 5k, 10k, half or full marathon will incentivise your toward your goal.

Measurable - track your progress regularly, want to lose a few pounds? Use an App such as Nutracheck or MyFitnessPal.
Being able to hold ourselves accountable from where we started a to where we are now can help to discourage us from breaking our shiny new habits.

Achievable - Success rarely happens overnight.
Aiming too high too soon may mean we lose our motivation, try aiming to have one less coffee or fizzy drink a day rather than quitting cold turkey.

Realistic - We all want to be the next Usain Bolt or Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, but not all of us will be able to achieve that level.
Be kind to yourself but also make it a challenge, you’re might not make it to CEO of your company this year, but you may well be able to get the next step up the ladder if you set your mind to it.

Time-Scale - Put a date on it!
Keep. Yourself. Accountable. When quitting smoking, it’s suggested to sett a date ahead of time to know when your last cigarette will be. Having a target in mind to know when your last fizzy drink, or cigarette or your first 5k run will allow you to keep your goal in mind.

Taking on new tasks or forming habits can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be! By using our tips, you'll set yourself up for success and see meaningful progress in no time. So if you're ready to make a change - start now!

Do you have the back-to-work blues? Are you STILL putting off the thing you meant to do before Christmas?

Well we're here with a ! To help you beat procrastination and start 2023 with new vigour.

Method 1: 5,4,3,2,1 METHOD – when you’re putting something off and just can’t get started – give yourself a 5-second countdown. This tricks your brain into doing an easy task which makes your brain think it’s already working on something, which makes it easy to transition into harder tasks

Method 2: 60-SECOND FOCUS – focus your attention on 1 specific part of the task you’re putting off. It could be 1 letter or 1 word. Focus your entire attention on this one thing for 60 seconds whilst breathing deeply. When the 60 seconds are up your brain has been reset to focus and clear of distraction

Method 3: EAT THE FROG – Mark Twain famously said, “If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning, & if it's your job to eat two frogs, it's best to eat the biggest one first.”
It might sound silly, but find the one thing you least want to do and do that FIRST. Once it’s done the rest of your day is clear and your mind will be free of distraction

Method 4: CLEAR YOUR SPACE – Having few distractions around you will reduce your capacity to pick something up and avoid the ‘thing’ you’re avoiding. Also, try using apps to help you focus such as Any.do, Forest etc which allow set a period where you will not receive distracting notifications on your phone

Method 5: BREAK IT DOWN – As the saying goes, ‘How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time', If you’re putting off a task because of its size, break it down into smaller pieces and work on just ONE of those at a time.

If your back to work blues are because you're looking for a change, get in touch today!
