Interview Tips (Part 2) – Hill McGlynn Recruitment

Following on from last week's Tuesday Tips, here are five more interview tips from Hill McGlynn Recruitment to help you perform well and leave a strong impression.

• Prepare examples of projects you’ve worked on
Be ready to talk about specific projects, what your role was, what went well, what challenges you faced, and how you dealt with them.

• Maintain eye contact and good posture
Body language matters. Sit up straight, look at the person interviewing you, and show that you are interested and engaged.

• Ask questions at the end
Always have a few questions prepared. Ask about upcoming projects, progression opportunities, team structure, or what they are looking for in the person they hire.

• Be honest about your experience
If you don’t know something, be honest. Employers respect honesty much more than exaggeration, and it avoids problems later on.

• Send a thank you email after the interview
A short thank-you email shows professionalism, good manners, and keeps you fresh in the interviewer’s mind after the meeting.

Interviews are not just about experience; they are about attitude, communication, and professionalism. Small things make a big difference.

Interview Tips (Part 1) – Hill McGlynn Recruitment

At Hill McGlynn Recruitment, we prepare candidates for interviews every day, and we see what makes the difference between someone who gets the job and someone who doesn’t. Here are our first five interview tips to help you make the right impression.

• Arrive 10 minutes early (or log in early for Teams)
Being early shows you are organised, reliable, and taking the interview seriously. Being late is one of the worst first impressions you can make.

• Dress smart – first impressions count
Even if the job is site-based, you should still dress smartly for the interview. A shirt and tie as a minimum is always a safe option.

• Research the company beforehand
Make sure you know what the company does, what type of projects they work on, and where they are based. It shows interest and preparation. Always check the website and LinkedIn page.

• Know your CV and be ready to talk through it
You should be able to talk confidently about your experience, the companies you’ve worked for, the projects you’ve been on, and your responsibilities.

• Be clear about what work you’ve done personally
Be honest and clear about what you personally did on a project, not just what the company was doing. Employers want to know your involvement and responsibilities.

A good interview is about preparation, attitude, and presentation. Get the basics right, and you’ll already be ahead of a lot of other candidates.

Keep an eye out, part 2 coming next Tuesday.

Hiring Tips (For Employers) – Hill McGlynn Recruitment

At Hill McGlynn Recruitment, we work closely with companies across the construction industry, and we see firsthand what works and what causes companies to miss out on good candidates. Here are our hiring tips to help you secure the right people.

• Move quickly – good candidates get snapped up
The best candidates are often only on the market for a few days. If your hiring process is slow, you will lose good people to companies that move faster. If you like a candidate, don’t wait; secure them before someone else does.

• Be clear about salary and package
Being vague about pay wastes everyone’s time. Good candidates know their worth and will prioritise roles where salary, benefits, hours, and package are clear from the start.

• Make sure job descriptions are accurate
A clear and accurate job description attracts the right candidates and avoids confusion at the interview stage. Be clear about duties, site location, hours, travel, and reporting structure.

• Keep interview processes short
Long interview processes lose candidates. In most cases, two interviews should be enough to make a decision. The longer the process, the more likely you are to lose the candidate.

• Give feedback quickly
Whether the answer is yes or no, candidates appreciate quick feedback. It reflects well on your company and helps recruiters keep the process moving efficiently.

• Sell the role, the company and their future with you
Remember that interviews work both ways. Good candidates are also deciding if they want to work for you. Talk about the projects, progression opportunities, company culture, and future work pipeline.

• Be flexible with interview times
Many good candidates are currently working and can’t always attend interviews during standard hours. Offering early morning, late afternoon, or Teams interviews can make a big difference.

• Use a specialist recruiter
Specialist recruiters understand the market, salary levels, and where to find the right candidates. They also pre-screen candidates, saving you time and reducing hiring risk.

• Treat employees well – reputation matters
The construction industry is smaller than people think, and word travels fast. A good interview experience, even for unsuccessful candidates, helps build a strong reputation and attracts better candidates in the future.

Hiring well is about being clear, professional, and efficient. Companies that do this consistently secure the best candidates, while companies that delay often miss out.

This week's news and why it matters for the construction industry.

💰 1. Welfare spend vs tax income (key macro signal)
Current widely cited figures:
~£331bn income tax receipts vs ~£333bn welfare spending
This indicates the UK is spending slightly more on benefits than it raises from income tax

Why it matters (construction):
Signals tight public finances → pressure on infrastructure budgets
Likely outcomes:
Delayed public projects
Increased scrutiny on HS2-style schemes
Greater reliance on private / JV development in the South East
And, it is just plain wrong and bloody ridiculous

🌍 2. Middle East ceasefire (energy + cost impact)
The useless UK PM Keir Starmer is pushing to stabilise a fragile US–Iran ceasefire
Reopening key routes like the Strait of Hormuz is critical to the oil supply

Why it matters:
Energy costs were rising due to conflict → hitting:
Materials (steel, cement, logistics)
Plant fuel
A sustained ceasefire could:
Reduce inflation pressure
Improve contract pricing stability

🧾 3. Tax squeeze hitting workers (South East impact)
Ongoing freeze on tax thresholds pulling more people into higher tax bands
Households facing ~£160–£410 extra annually in tax drag

Why it matters:
South East (especially the London commuter belt) hit hardest
Workers’ real income squeezed → affects:
Housing demand
Renovation activity
SME contractor cashflow

🏗️ 4. Construction sector slowdown (but stabilising)
UK construction output recently declined, with reduced new work
Sector previously down ~2.1% (worst in 4+ years)
Drivers:
High interest rates
Developer caution
Global uncertainty
But:
Downturn is “slowing” → early stabilisation signs

📉 5. Wider business climate (important for pipeline)
Weak confidence + inflation risk rising due to global instability
Insolvencies continuing across sectors

Why it matters:
Developers cautious
Funding harder to secure

🧭 Key Takeaways for Hill McGlynn (South East Focus)
🔹 Short-term (next 3 months)
The market is cautious but stabilising
Hiring remains selective

🔹 Medium-term (6–12 months)
Dependent on:
Ceasefire holding → growth scenario
Public finances → limited government-led work

🔹 Biggest risks
Energy price shocks returning
Tax burden reduces consumer demand
Continued project delays

Teams Interview Etiquette

At Hill McGlynn Recruitment, we regularly arrange Microsoft Teams interviews for candidates and we know that first impressions really do count, even through a screen. Here are our top tips to help you present yourself professionally and give yourself the best chance of success.

• Dress professionally – Wear a suit where possible, or at the very least a shirt and tie. Dressing smartly shows respect and demonstrates that you are taking the opportunity seriously.

• Choose a quiet location – Make sure you are somewhere you won’t be interrupted. Background noise, people walking around, or loud environments can be very distracting and give a poor impression.

• Use a laptop rather than a phone if possible – A laptop or computer keeps the camera steady, the framing professional, and avoids awkward angles.

• If you must use a phone, use headphones – Headphones improve sound quality and reduce background noise. They also make it easier for you to hear clearly and communicate without interruptions.

• If you have to take the interview in your car – Make sure the phone is raised to head height so the camera is straight on. Avoid low angles where the interviewer is looking up at you (no one wants a full view of a double chin or nostrils). Sit upright, make sure the lighting is clear, and keep the background as neutral as possible.

• Test everything beforehand – Check your internet connection, camera, microphone, and Teams login before the interview starts so there are no last-minute technical issues.

Preparation and presentation can make a big difference in a Teams interview. Treat it the same way you would a face-to-face interview and you’ll put yourself in the best possible position to succeed.

BIG Promotion!!!!!!!!

What can I possibly say about my right-hand woman, other than that Hill McGlynn would not be where it is today without her. It is an absolute pleasure to announce that Rebecca Laidler (Bex) has been promoted to Resourcing Director after 14 months of relentless hard work.

The last 18 months have been a rollercoaster. In March last year, we lost our main financial backer, which left us with huge ongoing costs for 2025 that, as a new business, we could ill afford. Although we’d had some early success, as a new agency in an oversaturated recruitment market, we were struggling to make the impact needed in a very difficult economy.

During the darkest hours of the business, the one person who fully stood by me was Bex. Even when I had a brief moment of self-doubt, she never wavered. She even offered to work unpaid while we got things moving because she believed in what we were building.

Now, 12 months later, we are thriving where many of our competitors are struggling. We are efficient, process-driven, and recruiting differently. Hill McGlynn is on the verge of changing how recruitment is done, and that wouldn’t be possible without Bex.

Not only is she the first promotion at Hill McGlynn, but she is also the engine room behind our resourcing success and the very direct, sensible voice behind the scenes. Above all of that, Bex is a loyal friend.

Congratulations, Bex, I am lucky to have you.

Tuesday’s Tips: Is AI hurting your CV?

As recruiters, we see hundreds of CVs per week. With the advent of AI, we are noticing that over 50% of CVs have been written by either ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, and if we can see it, so can employers!

AI can be a great tool when you're updating your CV. It can help you expand on your experience, suggest wording, and give you a good starting point. But one of the most common mistakes we’re seeing right now is candidates relying too heavily on AI, and it’s becoming very obvious when a CV has been fully AI-written.

Here are some of the biggest giveaways:
• Random words in **bold** throughout the CV
• Lines under each header
• Overly long bullet points and descriptions
• Language that sounds very generic and not quite like you
• The big one — the very long hyphen — like this — appearing throughout the document

What would Hill McGlynn advise?: Start with your own words and experiences, then use AI to help refine, not replace. Use AI as a tool, not as the author. Your CV should sound like a person; it should sound like you, not a programme.

If you need help, reach out; we’re always happy to review your CV and help you stand out for the right reasons.

Finally, did I use AI to help me write this post? Maybe —a — little
