✨Our final post of Volunteers Week is from Kate, our People Engagement & Compliance Officer, who supports our volunteers, and said,

💜“Every single volunteer we have has a unique strength that they bring to the team, and a beautiful reason for volunteering. I am beyond thankful for their time, energy, commitment and passion - these attributes shine through in the work they do and the difference they make. So, from the very bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!”

✍To show our appreciation to our volunteers, Kate handwrote over 45 thank-you cards!

🙌From everyone at Shropshire Mental Health Support, thank you to all our volunteers and the amazing work they do.

✨Kay started volunteering by co-hosting a journalling group for around 3 months for the charity in 2022, having moved to Shrewsbury in 2021. She wanted to volunteer to meet new people and get to know the community she had moved into. Kay is now a staff member as Telephone Support Worker.

🌟She says, "The team of people I have regular contact with are fantastic, good fun, and I feel I can be myself with them. I am allowed to do the job in my own way, but support is there when I need it. I feel privileged to be trusted by the people who use our services with what are sometimes very personal issues, and I also feel very lucky to have walked past the MHS offices and to have made contact with Heather when I did.

💜"I have learned so much about myself in the process, and I believe that the work has opened my mind and helped me have a much deeper understanding of human beings and the challenges we all face.

💚"I highly recommend volunteering at MHS. As a volunteer, you get so much out of the role, and I believe you can make a positive difference to the people you come into contact with. You also have a chance to be creative and learn things in the process."

As part of Volunteer Week, we will be sharing stories from our volunteers to celebrate and spotlight the great work they do.
Today we are focusing on Paul:

“I originally started volunteering with our walking group, and that eventually led to running the group. The men’s group followed, which I also ran for a number of years.

“After running the groups for a while, I was after a new challenge and was offered a role on our Wellbeing Vehicle as a support worker. I have learnt so much in this role, never knowing the challenges we may face.

“Volunteering is so rewarding, especially when you see someone who comes to a group for the first time, and you can see the progression over time.

“Volunteering has been life-changing for me; it improved my confidence and people skills. It gave me a purpose in life, a routine and a reason to get up in the morning.

“After struggling with my own mental health for years, I am now a different person. This is largely due to helping others and feeling like I am making a difference in other people's lives.”

We are currently recruiting for several volunteer positions within the charity. So, if you feel you can offer support and a listening ear to those who need support, please get in touch for an informal chat - 01743 368647.

Volunteers’ Week is back Mon 1 June – Sun 7 June It’s time to celebrate all things volunteering! Join us in thanking all our amazing volunteers .

Heather Ireland, CEO, said, “We are so grateful to our volunteers; every one of our valued volunteers makes such a positive contribution within SMHS, from driving the well-being vehicle, supporting the allotment group, to facilitating the peer support groups that are held every week. We couldn’t provide the high-quality mental health support to our community without their involvement. It is amazing to see some volunteers grow in confidence and gain new skills, whilst learning about the charity sector, benefiting from training and being part of an amazing team. We also have volunteers who come from professional backgrounds, from teaching, nursing and business, so also bring experience and knowledge, as well as their valuable time."
