68% of UK graduates say they're using what they learnt while studying.
Sounds like a success story, but what about the other 32%?

Too often, this statistic is viewed through the lens of graduate employability. Yet the reality is more nuanced.

Some graduates intentionally choose career paths outside their degree discipline. Others discover new interests through placements, internships or part-time work that redirect their ambitions. And increasingly, we're seeing employers place greater value on transferable skills than subject-specific knowledge.

But there are also structural challenges at play:
▪️Skills gaps between academic learning and workplace demands
▪️Increased competition for graduate-level roles
▪️Rapid changes in technology and job requirements
▪️A growing number of roles that simply didn't exist when students started their degree

The question isn't whether graduates are using every module they studied.

The question is whether employers are creating opportunities for graduates to apply, develop and build on the skills they've acquired.

At Graduate Career Solutions, we see first-hand that successful graduate recruitment isn't about matching a degree title to a job description. It's about understanding potential, identifying transferable skills, and connecting talented graduates with roles where they can thrive.

The 68% is encouraging.

The 32% reminds us there's still work to do.

The graduate job market continues to evolve, but one thing remains constant...

Employers are looking for more than a degree.

The graduates who stand out are those who can demonstrate commercial awareness, adaptability, communication skills, and a willingness to learn.

For employers, investing in graduate talent is investing in the future of your business. Fresh perspectives, digital fluency, and ambition can become powerful drivers of innovation and growth.

For graduates, the message is simple: focus on developing real-world skills alongside academic achievement.

Success is no longer about what you've studied alone. It's about how you apply it.

Great service is about making the right connections.

One piece of feedback we recently received perfectly captured the difference that a responsive and collaborative approach can make:

"I initially contacted Marc, who then put me in touch with Danielle, and had results within the day."

When businesses are looking to attract graduate talent, they don't just need access to candidates; they need access to the right expertise, networks and support.

That's why building strong relationships and understanding an employer's needs is so important.

By connecting businesses with the right people at the right time, we can help simplify the recruitment process and create positive outcomes faster.

A huge well done to Marc and Danielle for delivering such a seamless experience and demonstrating the value of a people-first approach to graduate recruitment.

Every successful graduate hire starts with a conversation, but often it's the connections made along the way that have the biggest impact.

Only 17%.
Let that sink in for a second.

That’s all the UK’s engineering and technology workforce made up of women, according to EngineeringUK.

Seventeen.

And yet, every year, thousands of talented female graduates leave university with the skills, curiosity, and ambition to shape the world we live in.

So… what’s happening?

Because this isn’t about ability. It never has been.
It’s about visibility, access, confidence, and opportunity.

We speak to graduates every day. We see the drive. The creativity. The real hunger to build something meaningful.

But too often, female graduates in engineering face barriers that shouldn’t be there:
👉 Feeling like “the only one in the room”
👉 Not seeing people like them in leadership roles
👉 Questioning whether they truly belong in the industry

Here’s the thing - engineering desperately needs more diverse voices.
Different perspectives lead to better solutions.
Better solutions lead to smarter innovation.
Smarter innovation shapes a better future.

And if only 17% of that future is being built by women… we’re missing out. Big time.

So to every female graduate thinking about a career in engineering:
✅ You belong in this space.
✅ Your ideas matter.
✅ Your perspective isn’t “different” — it’s essential.

And to employers:

It’s on all of us to open doors, challenge bias, and actively build environments where talent doesn’t just enter the industry, it stays and thrives.

The next generation of engineers is already here.

The real question is: are we doing enough to make sure they stay?
