There’s a lot of noise right now about the skills gap.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth…

Skills alone aren’t enough.

Because what really makes the difference is will.

👉 Attitude
👉 Reliability
👉 Accountability
👉 Communication
👉 Resilience

Skills might get someone in the door…

But will determines whether they stay, grow and succeed.

So maybe the question is—

Are we focusing too much on skills, and not enough on behaviours?

There’s a lot of noise right now about the skills gap in our country.

I talk about it every day. And to be fair, it’s encouraging to see real action starting to address it.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth…

There’s no point having people with the skills if they don’t have the will.

Or, put another way......behaviours and attitude.

Because the reality is, the most effective employees aren’t just technically capable. They show up differently.

They:

• Take ownership, even when it’s not “their job”

• Stay curious and keep learning

• Adapt when things change (because they always do)

• Communicate openly and work well with others

• Show resilience when things get tough

• Bring a positive, solutions-focused mindset

• Show reliability and consistency

• Take accountability for their actions

• Communicate professionally

• Understand and meet workplace expectations

Skills can be taught. Qualifications can be gained.

But mindset? That’s what turns potential into performance.

If we’re serious about closing the skills gap, we also need to talk about the will gap.

Because that’s where the real difference is made.
