"Why are you looking to leave your current job?"

Probably one of the most common questions you'll be asked in an interview.

And surprisingly, one of the easiest to get wrong.

At ReQuire, we have interviewed thousands of candidates over the years and, believe me, we’ve heard some interesting answers to this one! Sometimes people are genuinely unhappy. Their manager isn't great, promises haven't been kept, the culture has changed or they've simply had enough.

And that's fine. There are plenty of perfectly good reasons to want to leave a job.

But here's the thing... An interview probably isn't the best place to unload everything that's gone wrong over the past three years.

Even if you're completely justified, speaking badly about your current employer can leave an interviewer wondering what you might say about them one day.

My advice?

Talk more about what you're moving towards, rather than what you're trying to get away from.

👉 A new challenge
👉 More responsibility
👉 A different environment
👉 Somewhere you can develop

Be honest, absolutely. You don't need to pretend everything is wonderful if it isn't.

But keep it positive and try not to spend ten minutes explaining why your current boss drives you mad!

Remember, the interviewer is trying to understand what motivates you, not necessarily everything that's frustrated you.

And sometimes a simple, well-considered answer tells them far more about you than you realise.

We’re recruiting a Management Accountant in Salisbury. It’s a permanent role at £55,000 to £60,000, reporting directly to the Finance Director and joining the leadership team.

You’d be running the monthly management accounts, working on budgets, forecasts and financial modelling, and leading a small finance team of three. It would suit someone with strong management accounting experience, ideally fully qualified, from a manufacturing or product-led background.

A good candidate is still a good candidate, even if your software doesn't think so.

Recruitment has changed enormously over the years. CV databases, algorithms, keyword searches, AI, automated screening, they're all now part of the hiring landscape. And when used properly, some of it is genuinely brilliant.

But there is a problem.

People don't always fit neatly into keywords. Someone can have exactly the experience a business needs, but describe it differently on their CV. Their job title might not match. Or perhaps they're making a move that makes perfect sense once you've actually spoken to them.

That's where the human bit of recruitment still matters. Emotional Intelligence (EI), rather than just AI.

At ReQuire, when we receive a CV, it's read by a human being. We talk to people. We ask questions. We find out what they've actually done, what they're good at, what they want next.

Some of the best candidates aren't necessarily the ones with the best CV. It's always important to look beyond the words on the page.

AI is changing recruitment, and we're embracing plenty of it ourselves. But we don't want it replacing curiosity, conversation and judgement. That's still the bit of recruitment we enjoy most.

5 things to avoid when writing your CV 🫣

We see a lot of CVs. Here are five things that come up more often than you'd think.

1. The mystery hobbies. Nobody believes you actually rock climb and skydive every weekend. We've read enough CVs to know 'hobbies' usually means Netflix and hoping nobody asks a follow-up question.

2. The objective that says nothing. "Hardworking team player seeking a challenging opportunity" could apply to literally anyone applying for literally anything. Say what you actually want.

3. Font size 6 to fit it all on one page. If nobody can read it without zooming in, nobody's reading it.

4. A list of duties instead of what you actually achieved. "Responsible for managing a team" tells us your job title. "Reduced team turnover by 30%" tells us you're good at it.

5. An email address from 2009. [email protected] had its moment. That moment has passed.

None of this needs a full rewrite, usually just a second pair of eyes. If you'd like one, we're happy to help.

PS - We don't know if that email address actually exists... we hope not!
