What a day at Twickenham! 💛

Last weekend, our team zip wired 150 metres across the stadium to raise money for Lennox Children’s Cancer Fund.

It was a great day, and the team took on every metre in style.

A huge well done to Ciara Pryce, Ben Cox, Dave Brevitt, Fiona Dowling, Gaynor Hails, Lily Brown, Theresa Harrington and Thomas Surey for getting involved. Thank you as well to everyone who has donated so far.

The challenge is done, but the fundraising isn’t. There’s still time to support the team.

Every donation goes towards Lennox’s work with children and families affected by cancer.

Eight of our team will launch from the top tiers of Twickenham Stadium and zip wire 150 metres across the pitch, all in aid of Lennox Children's Cancer Fund.

How do you make learning accessible to your whole workforce, whatever language they speak?

On 19 November, our Legal, Compliance and Governance Director, Peter Ball, will be sharing how we've been using the FIR app, a multilingual learning app, with our teams on site. We'd love you to join us.

The session is Inclusion First, a webinar from National Highways and the Supply Chain Sustainability School.

Alongside Peter, you'll hear National Highways set out its new People Strategy and equality objectives, plus how the new supplier inclusion toolkit is being put into practice.

Four days to go until eight of our team zip wire 150 metres across Twickenham Stadium.

They're raising money for Lennox Children's Cancer Fund, our charity partner, which provides practical, emotional and financial support to children and families affected by cancer.

In construction and infrastructure, workers may be recruited through several organisations and move between projects. That makes the warning signs harder to spot: wages withheld, identity documents taken, threats, or pressure to work in unsafe conditions.

Walk Free’s 2023 Global Slavery Index estimates that 50 million people were living in modern slavery in 2021, 10 million more than in 2016.

Ahead of Anti-Slavery Day on 18 October, here’s how VGC works to help prevent exploitation across our temporary workforce supply chain:

→ Independent scrutiny through Workforce Assured, which we achieved in 2025
→ Working with Stronger Together and the Supply Chain Sustainability School to build awareness across our teams
→ Supporting Unseen, and encouraging colleagues to download the Unseen app to learn the signs and report concerns

Prevention depends on people knowing what to look for, and feeling able to speak up when something doesn’t seem right.

Congratulations, Satinder! 👏

Satinder-Pal Singh, a Traffic Marshall, has been recognised with a Go Beyond Award after being highlighted in the West Delivery Unit's Weekly Health, Safety and Wellbeing Dispatch.

Nominated by Simon Woodcock, VGC Labour Manager, Satinder was praised for managing traffic flow on a very busy day, and for covering a colleague's round while they were on their break.

He also brings a strong understanding of the role and a consistently excellent work ethic to the job.

As Simon commented, "Well done, Satinder. Excellent work, as always. A well-deserved achievement."

Nearly two-thirds of construction workers regularly experience stress. Around half experience anxiety.

That's according to research from Mates in Mind, which is particularly relevant ahead of World Mental Health Day on 10 October.

Long hours, physically demanding work, tight deadlines and time away from home all take a toll, and construction still carries a culture where getting on with it is often easier than speaking up.

At VGC, Donatas Jausicas (Operations Manager) and Ben Cox (Labour Manager) have recently completed mental health awareness training, so we're better placed to look out for our workers.

"I found the training to be extremely valuable and engaging. Mental health is such a prevalent topic, and I was keen to develop a deeper understanding of it. The course provided valuable insights and has significantly improved my awareness, not only in supporting and managing the mental wellbeing of others but also in recognising and managing my own mental health more effectively," shares Ben.

Struggling with your mental health isn't a sign of weakness. Support is available, whether it's for you or someone you're worried about on site.

Slow to answer in a meeting. Would rather pick up the phone than write an email. Never seems to take notes.

It's easy to mistake any of these for a lack of effort or attention. Sometimes, they're signs of dyslexia.

This year's Dyslexia Awareness Week theme is “Dyslexia in real life: At work”, a reminder that dyslexia doesn't stay behind at school.

Around 1 in 10 people are dyslexic, according to the British Dyslexia Association. Many adults have spent years building their own ways of coping, so it isn't always obvious. Some have never been formally diagnosed.

From site to office, the support that helps is often simple:

→ Allowing extra thinking time before expecting an answer
→ Following up verbal instructions in writing
→ Sharing agendas and documents ahead of a meeting

None of these cost much, and most make work clearer for everyone.

Health, safety and wellbeing shape the way we work across every project.

From maintaining high standards of compliance to supporting the people on site, they're part of the everyday decisions our teams make alongside clients and delivery partners.

That work hasn't gone unnoticed. We're proud to share that we've been shortlisted for the Health, Safety & Wellbeing Impact Award at the BC&I Awards 2026, for our Highways Framework entry.

It’s a reflection of the care and collaboration of everyone who has contributed to that framework.

Winners are announced on 14 October, and we're wishing the best of luck to everyone shortlisted alongside us.
