Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

Conversations around mental health don’t always come easily, especially in an industry like ours. Long hours, physical labour and a culture that can lean towards a “just get on with it” mindset rarely leave space for checking in.

So today, we encourage you to take a pause, ask a colleague how they’re doing and listen properly to what they tell you.

If you or someone you know needs support, these resources are available:

→ VGC's Mental Health Support resource centre: https://vgcgroup.co.uk/news/if-you-would-like-some-support-with-your-mental-health/
→ Mental Health Referral Form: https://vgcgroup.co.uk/staff-resources/occupational-health-mental-health-referral/
→ Construction Worker Helpline (8am-8pm): 0808 801 0372
→ Samaritans (24 hours): 116 123
→ Su***de prevention training for construction workers: https://cinmagazine.co.uk/free-suicide-prevention-training-for-construction-workers-launched/

Nobody wants to be the one who holds up the job. It can feel easier to carry on than to stop and ask.

But the people who pause, ask a question and flag a change aren't seen as getting in the way. They're actually the ones trusted to lead.

As Richard Wheeler, VGC’s SHE Director, shared:
“All senior people, both within VGC and our clients, will support anyone who stops and says, ‘Let's take another look at this.’”

In environments where safety carries more weight, speaking up can be the harder thing to do in the moment, yet still be the right one.

You're mid-task when something doesn't line up with how it was briefed.

Maybe the kit you need isn't where it should be.

The ground's different underfoot. Someone experienced says they know a “quicker” way.

Nothing's gone wrong yet, but the task has changed. That's the moment that matters.

Stopping to check when something changes is a mark of a safe, switched-on team.

Swipe to see the signs worth stopping for. ➡️

Spot one? Stop the task, complete a new POWRA and speak to your Foreman before carrying on.

Pause. Re-evaluate. Get authorisation.

Sometimes, people get hurt on site not because they're careless.

They were only trying to help, keeping things moving and not bothering their supervisor.

But when the job in front of you stops matching what you were briefed, that same good intention is exactly what puts you at risk.

Four VGC staff were injured this year. In every case, the task had changed and work carried on without stopping to check it.

Three needed time off to recover.

Good intentions don't remove risk, so when something changes:

✅ Stop the task
✅ Complete a new POWRA
✅ Speak to your Foreman
✅ Suggest your solution if you've got one
✅ Carry on once it's authorised

Not extra paperwork, just what gets everyone home the way they left.

It's easy to claim candidates come first. Harder to make it true, day in, day out.

Dan Goldstone, VGC's Labour Manager, is one of the reasons it's true, for every candidate he works with.

For Dan, it's the basics done right that matter most: the hours processed properly, people paid correctly and paid on time.

Simple things, but they're what make candidates' working lives easier. It's this attitude that shapes his time at VGC.

Watch the full video as he shares more on what his role entails and why VGC stands out in the industry. 📹

VGC Group and CareerForces already had one thing in common before this became official: both hold the Armed Forces Covenant Gold Award, recognising a shared commitment to the armed forces community.

Now that commitment has a bigger platform behind it.

VGC Group has acquired a majority stake in CareerForces, the veteran-led recruitment social enterprise founded by Andy Howe, which has supported more than 1,600 service leavers into civilian careers since 2019.

The partnership opens up new career pathways for veterans and service leavers across construction, highways, infrastructure, transportation and energy.

Two organisations that already believed the same thing, now working from the same side.
