The REC’s latest Report on Jobs * says:
👉 Hiring demand still falling… but slowest drop in nearly a year.
👉 Candidate availability up sharply (redundancies + weaker demand).
👉 Pay growth? Subdued. Except… engineering permanent demand is the ONLY category still growing.

Translation for engineering recruitment:

Employers:
The “passive, picky” engineer myth is half true. Yes, skills shortages remain – but with more candidates on the market (some from softer sectors), you now have a short window to upgrade your talent baseline.
Your edge won't be hybrid/remote alone anymore. It’s speed of hire + niche sourcing (contract-to-hire, AI talent mapping, referral schemes) + retention logic (upskill the engineers you have before they test the market).

Engineers:
Your skills are still rare – but salary inflation is cooling. Don’t just chase the highest bidder. Look for roles with long-term project depth and employers who invest in training. The ones slashing L&D budgets now will lose you in 12 months.

AI – more gAIn and less pAIn? The jury is still out.

A recent Sky News piece * on AI highlighted a range of topics and different experiences of AI for candidates, clients, and recruiters.

For talent teams and recruiters, automation is brilliant for easing the pain of initial shortlisting – provided the key job criteria are well defined.

But AI can’t – and shouldn’t – replace the human relationship building that’s so essential when hiring.

Engineering in the Midlands? There are green shoots worth talking about.

The latest Report on Jobs makes for cautious reading nationally — but dig into the regional and sector data and there's a more encouraging picture for those of us working in Midlands engineering.
The Midlands was the only English region where contract/freelance roles are stable and a key resource for businesses. And engineering? Called out specifically as a sector holding its own.
