Sales Estimator | Sheet Metal Fabrication | Dudley | £30–38K

This one's for someone with a sheet metal, metal fabrication or laser cutting background who's comfortable reading CAD drawings and working out what a job should cost.

You don't need to have done the estimating role before — if you've got the technical grounding, they'll train you on the software.

The REC’s latest Report on Jobs * says:
👉 Hiring demand still falling… but slowest drop in nearly a year.
👉 Candidate availability up sharply (redundancies + weaker demand).
👉 Pay growth? Subdued. Except… engineering permanent demand is the ONLY category still growing.

Translation for engineering recruitment:

Employers:
The “passive, picky” engineer myth is half true. Yes, skills shortages remain – but with more candidates on the market (some from softer sectors), you now have a short window to upgrade your talent baseline.
Your edge won't be hybrid/remote alone anymore. It’s speed of hire + niche sourcing (contract-to-hire, AI talent mapping, referral schemes) + retention logic (upskill the engineers you have before they test the market).

AI – more gAIn and less pAIn? The jury is still out.

A recent Sky News piece * on AI highlighted a range of topics and different experiences of AI for candidates, clients, and recruiters.

For talent teams and recruiters, automation is brilliant for easing the pain of initial shortlisting – provided the key job criteria are well defined.
