Yesterday Jak and Harry were at the DWP Jobs Fair at Notts County, meeting young people from across the city who are ready to start their careers.

It was brilliant to see so many eager to get into work and just as good to see so many local businesses offering roles, training and the chance to get a foot in the door.

Yesterday Jak and Jack headed to Nottingham College's Highfields campus to talk to more than 140 students about building a career in engineering 🔧

We kicked off by asking who knew what they were doing after college. Plenty of hands stayed down and that's completely fine.

The trap we see time and again is students applying to the big name companies, getting a rejection and giving up on the career they trained for.

We work with thousands of SMEs across the East Midlands who need engineers from every discipline. Many of them are businesses students have never heard of and they're hiring.

So we shared what employers really look for, how to build a CV with little experience and how to make a strong first impression at interview.

The opportunities are out there. It's about putting your best professional self forward 💪

September is the best month to apply for a new job and there are a few reasons why we agree with the professionals 👇

For one, most people are back in the office after annual leave and as holidays are finishing business naturally starts to pick up and all those conversations that got put off until "after summer" finally happen.

Today's the day. Thousands of students across the country are opening envelopes that represent years of hard work. Some of you will be over the moon, others might feel unsure, and that's completely normal too. Your grades do not define you.

Here's where things stand for 2026:

🎓 Over 750,000 students sit A-levels each year and around one in four ends up switching direction from what they first planned, so changing your mind is more normal than you think

💷 Apprentice pay has just risen to £8 an hour and degree apprenticeships now offer starting salaries averaging £24,100

💼 Many young people start out in entry level office, IT or engineering roles before moving into training schemes and better paid positions further down the line

🌱 Growing sectors like green energy, digital health and tech continue to open up fresh entry routes for anyone starting from scratch

So whether you're heading to university, starting an apprenticeship or going straight into work, remember this.

Not a bad way to spend a Tuesday evening ⚽

Yesterday Jak and Alex (the two Forest fans in the office, you can probably guess who volunteered fastest) headed down to for a networking event hosted by East Midlands Chamber and . Full stadium tour, loads of good conversations with local businesses and plenty of Reds chat thrown in too, of course.

We get along to a fair few of these events throughout the year, but this was easily one of the busiest we've been to in a while. It was brilliant to see the room absolutely packed with people from right across the region, and even better to hear how well so many local businesses are doing. From small sole traders just starting out to growing SMEs and some much bigger names, there was such a genuinely good mix of people in one place, and it's always a reminder of just how much talent and ambition there is on our doorstep here in the East Midlands.

Conversations like these are exactly why we keep showing up to them, you never quite know who you'll end up chatting to or what might come from it.

Cheers to East Midlands Chamber, KuKu Connect and The City Ground for a great evening, Jak and Alex will take any excuse for a return trip.
