During autumn and winter, our bodies can’t make enough vitamin D from sunlight. Everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during these seasons to help regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in our body.
A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia in adults. To keep our bones and muscles healthy, it’s best to take a 10-microgram supplement of vitamin D. Apart from the sunlight, we can get Vitamin D from oily fish – such as salmon, sardines, herring, and mackerel, red meat, liver, egg yolks, fortified foods, and food supplements.
