What better way to show the value of National Apprenticeship Week, than to speak to someone who has worked through an apprenticeship and gone on to utilise those skills. We spoke to Leroy Branson about his 20+ years of experience in the Construction Industry, from apprentice level to working for Taylor Wimpey, and now Site Manager for Miller Homes. Leroy offers insight from both the employee and employer sides of the apprenticeship scheme, showing how important they are to all involved, alongside how things have changed since he started on Site.

‘I became an apprentice as this was a great opportunity to learn on the job. I had been at college for a year and felt being on Site would allow me to put skills into practise. Being an apprentice gave me hands on experience, and I was being paid to train.
It’s not good to see there are less apprentices on now than when I was one 15 years ago. The current site I am working on only has 3 apprentices, all on the M&E side. There are currently no Brick Laying or Carpentry apprentices. There seems to be less appeal these days, could this be due to pay? I see very little advertising and promotion anywhere about becoming an apprentice.
As an apprentice you get out what you put in. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Listen and watch everything you are being told/shown. Show up everyday and be a 100% committed.
Walking onto a building site for the first time can be daunting, but remember you are there to learn and work. This is your future and you are the driving force. Ask questions, learn from your mistakes - that’s how we learn! You can go as far in the Industry as you are willing to push yourself.’

For our third instalment of articles re National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke to Vicky Clark, Business Development Executive at Northampton College. As someone directly involved with apprentices at entry level, Vicky gave us a great insight into apprenticeship numbers, popularity, advantages and advice!
‘For 2025/2026 academic year, there were 9 applicants per vacancy within the construction sector. Northampton College offers a robust matching service, ensuring we are placing as many apprentices as possible, based on the skills set, drive and passion for the role. Our apprenticeship applications numbers continue to remain strong, and we continue to grow this year on year.
Currently this year, within construction, Electrical Apprenticeships continue to be the most popular. But we have also seen growth in Property Maintenance Operative this year due to the multi skills this provides.
With regards for advantages for employers, apprentices are trained specifically to the firm’s methods and standards, ensuring they learn to do the job "right" from the start, they are cost-effective, with lower wages and potential government funding of up to 100% for training costs and possible grants from CITB. Employing apprentices can enhance a company's image, often perceived as a boost to corporate social responsibility, which can help in winning tenders.
This then gives the apprentice an opportunity to earn while you learn, gaining a recognised qualification. Having hands-on experience in their chosen field, makes them highly employable upon completion.
Employers value reliability and enthusiasm over experience. My advice for anyone interested in applying for an apprenticeship is to ensure you show initiative and the right attitude. Being punctual, managing time well, and asking questions is key to standing out against others.’

Continuing with our National Apprenticeship Week theme, we spoke with Jim Mannion who has progressed from Assistant Site Manager to Contracts Manger, working with many of the big industry names such as Taylor Wimpey plc and Bellway Homes over the last 20 years. Jim has now undertaken a Clerk of Work role, strengthening his ability to uphold high construction standards and deliver exceptional results. Jim spoke us through his experiences with apprentices and what has changed over his time in the industry.

‘During my time in the housing industry, I would interview candidates and have apprentices on my sites. I would ensure they were put with trades that were willing to have an apprentice with them. Occasionally this was an issue as some trades did not want too or would prefer not to have an apprentice with them. I would follow up on the apprentice with monthly or bi-monthly progress meetings to hear their views on how things were progressing.
There is a risk, if we do not have apprenticeships and training programs, the knowledge and experience from the older trades will not be passed on and will be lost.
The good practices I have noticed is that the sub-contractors are now introducing their own apprenticeship routes.
The not so good is when the main contractors take apprentices on, at the end of their apprenticeship, they will either offer them a role as an assistant site manager or let them go, maybe there could be an option for some mid-range opportunities?
With the age of apprenticeship now starting later at the age of 18 a lot of candidates get into bad working habits before starting, then find the adjustment into daily working life very hard and leave the industry early.
The entry level to apprenticeship is not so good. Candidates are required to have certain levels of maths and English which some will never achieve, yet this is stopping them becoming a trades person on a building site!
A good apprentice is a candidate that has an interest in the trade they are about to take up. Wants to learn and is willing to make mistakes and learn from them.
Advice leading on from this to anyone interested in applying for an apprenticeship would be to understand the industry that they are about to embark in. Take an interest and understand that they must start at the bottom and work up and with the knowledge and experience rewards will come!’

As National Apprenticeship Week kicks off, we thought what better time to catch up with those involved in all stages of the apprenticeship process!
Last academic year participation in apprenticeships increased by 4%, with 353,500 new starters in England alone.

Over the course of this week, we will talk to a 3rd year apprentice and his employer, an executive director of curriculum at a local college, a contracts manager and a site manager who began his career as an apprentice.

Mikey is an 18 year old electrical apprentice we placed with a local company here in Northampton. He is currently in his 3rd year, spending time on site and in college.
We sat down for a chat with Mikey and asked about the decision making behind his choice to start an apprenticeship, his experiences so far and if he has any advice for those interested in doing the same –

‘I decided to become an apprentice after returning to 6th form and realising being in a school environment was not for me. I investigated a trade and decided on electrics. And that the best option was learning on the job and doing 1 day a week at college.
The pros of being on an apprenticeship is being on site and learning hands on in a real working environment. Working with different people on different jobs weekly/daily. And obviously being paid!
For anyone who might want to be an apprentice I’d say look into the trade you want to do, as companies give up their time to train you. Look into which college is going to suit you and your needs. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.’
