What makes a healthcare vacancy difficult to recruit?

Sometimes, it genuinely is a shortage of suitable candidates.

But sometimes, the problem is the vacancy itself.

We speak to healthcare employers and candidates regularly, and there are a few things that can make an already challenging recruitment process even harder:

📍 Location – particularly where candidates need to drive or public transport is limited.

🕐 Shift patterns – hours that are difficult to fit around family life or other commitments can quickly narrow the candidate pool.

💷 Pay and benefits – especially when candidates have similar roles to choose from locally.

📋 Too many ‘must-haves’ – an overly restrictive brief can rule out people who could otherwise be a very good fit.

⏳ A slow recruitment process – good candidates may be speaking to several employers at once. Long gaps between application, interview and an offer can mean losing them.

And sometimes, it’s simply how the opportunity is being presented. A list of duties tells someone what they’ll be doing, but not much about the team, working environment or why they might want to join.

Not every hard-to-fill vacancy has a quick fix. But if a role has been advertised for some time without attracting the right people, it can be worth looking at the vacancy itself before simply advertising it again.

A fresh pair of eyes can sometimes spot what’s getting in the way.

A lovely evening at the Proud To Care Cornwall Awards on Friday, celebrating some of the brilliant people working across care.
